Hello, I'm Abbey and welcome to News Nuggets. This week we'll be learning about sports and
00:25
exercise. But first, let's meet this week's News Nuggets.
00:30
Hi everyone. We're at St Helen's Church of England Primary School with our two News Nuggets.
00:40
Hi, I'm Caleb. Hello and I'm Zach. So what's first on our tour? The sports show. Right,
00:45
let's go. Oh wow, look at this. What's some of your favourite things to play with here?
00:51
The dodgeballs, the footballs. And what else do you have in here? We have tennis rackets
00:58
and we've also got the hockey sticks. Okay, and what's in here? Basketballs.
01:05
You up for a game? Yeah. Let's go, go on.
01:10
Oh, me! I certainly feel happier after I've scored a few goals.
01:13
That's actually called a home. Oh, all right, I'll leave it to the experts then.
01:17
That's the sports day trophy. Oh, so you won? Yeah. Oh, go on then, lift the trophy.
01:25
This is the daily mile. You do a mile a day, but how do you do it? Do you walk it? Do you run it?
01:29
We do both. That's pretty impressive.
01:36
Now, let's go back to their school and meet some super sporty guests and see how they keep fit.
01:47
Hi everyone. Hi. We have some very special guests. Can you introduce yourselves?
01:54
Hi, I'm Ollie. I work for Cheltenham Athletic Football Club as the education officer.
01:58
Hi, I'm Emily and I play for Chelsea Women's Academy.
02:01
Hi, I'm Sulcia. I race for Great Britain in my age group as a triathlete. When I do my races,
02:07
I swim first and then I get on my bike and then I run.
02:12
Why is sport so important? Sport's important for me for my mental health and I like to keep fit.
02:18
For me, sport's really important as a young person as it keeps you active and it keeps
02:22
you outside and it's also very engaging and it helps you learn. Do you have to eat certain foods?
02:27
You've got nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and nutrients all come from vegetables
02:34
and fruit, which are really important towards our immune system, which helps us fight off illnesses
02:38
and flus and colds. Did it take a long time to get to where you are now? I was 40 when I started
02:44
and it took me nine years of hard work and dedication. For me, I've been playing football for
02:51
pretty much all my life and it took me until I was nine years old before I got picked up
02:56
for an academy. I started playing sports when I was around your age, in year five,
03:00
and played lots of football, went to school, discovered lots of different sports like
03:03
athletics, which I'd never seen before really, and then I went to university and did my sports
03:08
science degree. What can children like our news nuggets here do if they don't like PE or sports?
03:14
All you really need to be looking for is about 30 minutes a day. I have two dogs at home so I often
03:18
go for walks with them. And some of you might think that you've not, you don't like sports,
03:22
but that might just be because you've not found your sport yet. So we've come out to the field,
03:26
your classmates are going to join us in just a sec, but we all look pretty ready. Let's go play
03:30
some football. Yeah. What's the warm up? Bit of a pulse raiser. Ready for a run? Yeah. Let's go.
03:41
Well, I don't know if I'm ready or tired now, but let's bring your class on. Come on, let's play.
03:53
As we have a Chelsea goalkeeper with us, let's see who can get a goal past there. What do we think?
03:57
Yeah. All right, let's go. Come on. Save.
04:06
Your teachers are about to have a go.
04:17
High five.
04:21
Well, that was really good fun. When you are in the middle of a game of sport,
04:25
what's it like? Do you get nervous? I think mine's more at the start, I get nervous. And then
04:30
once you're in and the adrenaline's clicked in and you focus on what your end goal is,
04:35
then that's good. The adrenaline pumps, which is that hormone, which gets you excited for football.
04:39
And then when your heart's racing, you forget about all your worries outside of the pitch.
04:43
And you can't really think about being nervous because you're so concentrated on what you're
04:47
doing. You'll get into a negative mindset if you're thinking like that. How is it to be a
04:51
team player? Well, as a team player, you need to work hard for your teammates. If I work really
04:55
hard and then I've got teammates that are really lazy and don't try, then I can get incredibly
05:00
frustrated. So for me as a goalkeeper, when I'm making saves, I can't put the ball in the net.
05:05
So that's where I need the rest of my team to play their part. How does sport keep you healthy
05:10
then? What's the science? Well, when you play sport, what happens is that your heart starts
05:15
to increase its heart rate. So as your blood starts getting pumped around the body to your
05:20
working muscles, then it carries oxygen, which means you need your lungs. What happens if you
05:25
don't exercise? When you don't exercise, your body starts to get used to being lazy, which could lead
05:31
to heart and health problems later on in life. Now let's find out more about how sport can affect
05:40
us in our daily lives. According to Sports England, an organisation funded by us, the public,
05:47
almost half of children are keeping active by doing an hour of physical activities a day. Which
05:53
is great, but it also means half of people are not physically active for this recommended time.
05:59
That's millions of children. Keeping sports teams and after-school clubs going costs money,
06:05
and it's the central government that gives this money to the local government. They then fund
06:10
local sports. But your parents and guardians might need to pay for you to do sports because
06:16
the local government can't fund it all. Food is so important as well, and if you're not having a
06:21
balanced and healthy diet full of different food groups, then it can be harder to exercise.
06:27
Different foods work together to give you energy, so it's important to eat as healthy as you can
06:33
every day. That way, you'll feel better for longer. And remember to drink lots of water too.
06:39
The government says they're trying to encourage a million more children to be active. But what
06:44
are they doing, and are they doing enough to help? Medway Council said in a statement that they offer
06:49
a huge range of activities and classes, from holiday sports camps to regular football sessions
06:55
and disability sport activities. There are also free facilities in the open spaces, such as ball
07:01
courts, tennis courts, skate parks, and a BMX pump track. Girls are also less likely to be active than
07:07
boys. But since the Lionesses, our national women's football team, won the Euro Cup in 2022,
07:14
more girls have gotten into football. There are also lots of places all around Kent and Medway
07:20
where you can take part in sports and have fun. Next, I went with our news nuggets on a tour of
07:26
Gillingham Football Club Stadium. This is something that I've never seen before. It looks a lot different
07:34
to TV. It looks a lot different to TV, doesn't it? Priestfield Stadium, home to Gillingham Football
07:39
Club, definitely looked cooler in person. We got the chance to find the best seats in the whole
07:45
stadium. We then went inside and bumped into two under-18s players. What positions do you play?
07:53
I'm a striker slash a winger. And I'm a number 10. How did you get to this position? So I've been
07:58
here since I was very young. I've been here since I was about your age. I got scouted at a Sunday
08:04
league game. Next, it was time for a press conference with rising star footballers and
08:09
news nuggets, Caleb and Zach. How did it feel? You scored 11 goals between you. It was really good.
08:16
I was playing at my best today and I scored seven. Where are we going next? Well, I think I'll take
08:21
you up to the top. Of the stadium? Yeah. Look at that. We ended the day by speaking to two players
08:28
from the first-team squad, Jake and Tim. I'm a goalkeeper. I'm a centre-mid. What does centre-mid
08:36
do? It's a player that's playing in the middle of the pitch and is basically defending and attacking.
08:42
Can you score goals? Yeah, I can. Have you scored a lot? I scored last weekend.
08:48
Do you think Medway is a good place for sport? Yeah, I think so. I think there's a lot of
08:53
grassroots clubs, a lot of professional clubs as well around this level.
08:56
What football team do you support? I'm an Arsenal fan. Yes. Who's Arsenal? I support Manchester City.
09:07
What are your team-mates like? They're fun. I think we've got a good group. They work hard as
09:11
well. They work hard. How much training do you do a week? We train every day except for Wednesday.
09:16
How does it feel to be playing a game on the pitch? To bring joy to your fans, it's a great
09:23
feeling. Have you ever made a mistake in a game? Oh yeah, plenty. But it's part of the game.
09:29
Why do you think it's more important that people are interested in men's and women's football?
09:36
Sports are for everyone, especially football. To be fair, my sister plays football as well.
09:40
Do you still see that there's a difference between how the sports are treated or is it more equal?
09:45
Still a little difference. It's still quite far away from the men's game but
09:49
it has come on a very long way. Do you have a celebration when you score?
09:53
Yeah, my celebration usually is...
09:57
Oh, we've all got to do it now. Ready? We'll follow Tim's lead. Ready?
10:01
One, two, three.
10:08
Now let's take a look at what else has been happening in our local area. Here's your news
10:12
roundup. Chatham Football Club are working with Kent Police to help stop violence. They want to
10:18
educate children and teenagers on the dangers of carrying knives. Posters and workshops will
10:23
be in 70 schools who have joined the pledge. Remember when Medway Council said they have
10:29
lots of activities and that some of them didn't cost any money to do? They've now stopped free
10:34
swimming for under-16s, which means you now have to pay to swim. Lots of families were unhappy
10:39
about this because it helped them a lot, and hundreds of people have signed a petition asking
10:43
Medway Council to bring it back. We asked the leader of Medway Council what he'll do to help
10:48
children stay healthy. We continue to have our sports centres available. Young people are
10:54
important. We want to make sure they get the best services they can. Now that we know what's been
10:59
going on in Kent, let's round up what we've learned today. We've learned that sports can
11:03
keep us physically healthy but mentally healthy too. Why not try something like yoga to help you
11:10
feel calm? Regular exercise helps pump blood and oxygen around our body, which means that our heart
11:17
and lungs can stay working better for longer when we grow up. Food is also really important too.
11:23
And finally, we know that one of the central and local government's job is to give us access to
11:29
sports and different clubs, so we should tell them if there aren't enough. Well, that's it for now.
11:35
Thank you to our News Nuggets. See you next time for another bite-sized bulletin.
