Birmingham Airport is expanding its arrivals hall with over £10 million in upgrades. The work includes a new baggage carousel and more border control desks to help process growing passenger numbers.

00:08passenger numbers. The £10 million project includes a seventh baggage carousel and three

00:13new UK border force desks ready in time for the summer rush. The upgrades are designed

00:19to reduce queuing, speed up the arrivals process and make better use of the space already available.

00:25As demand grows, the airport says it needs to handle more passengers and more flights.

00:30Last year saw over 13 million people pass through Birmingham Airport. That number is

00:34expected to rise again this year to nearly 14 million. To meet this increase, the North

00:40Terminal will gain a new baggage carousel costing £4.2 million. Meanwhile, the Immigration

00:46Hall in the South Terminal is being reconfigured, with the number of primary control desks rising

00:51to eight. This expansion means the airport can process up to eight arriving flights per

00:56hour in that area, something it hopes will relieve pressure and reduce wait times for

01:02those just landing. There are also longer term goals at play. The airport is aiming

01:07to serve 18 million passengers a year by 2033. As part of that plan, it's already been granted

01:13permission to increase the number of night flights, paving the way for more round the

01:17clock traffic. The current upgrades form part of a wider £100 million capital spend

01:22stretching to 2033. That includes improvements to infrastructure, environmental performance

01:28and overall passenger experience. Having focused on departures last year, the attention now

01:33turns to arrivals, ensuring those flying into the region are met with fewer delays, faster

01:39processing and a more efficient welcome.
