00:00Melinda French-Gates is getting candid about when she knew it was time to divorce Bill Gates.

00:05During an interview with People Magazine published April 2nd,

00:08the philanthropist details some of the quote,

00:10difficult periods during her marriage to the Microsoft co-founder

00:14and how it ultimately led to them going their separate ways.

00:17As she writes in her upcoming book, The Next Day, per the outlet,

00:21Bill has publicly acknowledged that he wasn't always faithful to me.

00:24And in addition to the alleged infidelity,

00:27Melinda also notes of a recurring nightmare she had in 2019,

00:30a year before their separation, where a beautiful house would collapse around her.

00:34Which later turned into a vision of her and Bill's three children,

00:38Jennifer, Rory and Phoebe, plummeting into the void.

00:42Explaining,

00:42As dramatic as it sounds, I knew in that moment

00:46that I was going to have to make a decision and that I was going to have to make it by myself.

00:50And in the beginning of 2020, Melinda asked Bill to start living separately,

00:55which she says was quote, one of the scariest conversations she's ever had.

00:59And by the end of the year, she officially wanted to end their marriage.

01:03And while Melinda mentions that the exact reason for the divorce is for Bill to share,

01:07she writes in the book that seeking therapy quote,

01:10made it possible for me to respond to the betrayals in my marriage

01:13without portraying myself in return.

01:16Since announcing their divorce in May of 2021,

01:18the two have spoken candidly about their split,

01:21with Bill recently calling the end of his marriage quote,

01:23the mistake I most regret.

01:25Telling the Times in January,

01:27You would have to put that at the top of the list.

01:29There are others, but none that matter.

01:31The divorce thing was miserable for me and Melinda for at least two years.

01:35In return, Melinda reacted to her ex-husband's comments,

01:38revealing that she does not feel the same way.

01:41As she told Elle magazine in March,

01:43Look, divorces are painful, and it's not something I would wish on any family.
