Federal Election 2025: Melburnians share which issues matter to them

Voters have had their first taste of a federal campaign focused on health, energy and cost-of-living pain. AAP hit the pavement to find out what issues matter most to Melburnians. Vision courtesy: AAP

00:00The housing market is obviously, in my opinion, a huge issue for people trying to get into

00:04the market.

00:05Like, it's just, it's very hard.

00:07Like I grew up in Kew, Kew area, and to live anywhere near where my parents live would

00:14be extremely unattainable for myself.

00:17And I do understand that also you do need a, can't just live in the suburbs, et cetera,

00:23et cetera.

00:24But it's something that's just really unattainable, especially here in Victoria, I would like

00:28to say, like the median house price being ridiculous for someone that earns under $100,000

00:34a year, for example.

00:36And yeah, it would just be something that if could be addressed a little bit better,

00:42and maybe a plan thought out about how we could help achieve that for you, especially

00:46for young people would be fantastic.

00:48I think cost of living and inflation is a pretty big one.

00:51It is driving all the prices up, like in the heart of getting by.

00:58I think it's a very important issue.

01:02And I think most people are feeling the pressures of it at the moment.

01:06I think cheaper childcare would be really good.

01:09I think better subsidies there.

01:11I think education is a key focus, so more schools, better schools, better teachers,

01:18better education.

01:19I think they're the two key main ones for us.

01:21I think the environment, I guess, is certainly really important.

01:25Mental health is the most important issue that we Australians have to look at, because

01:29from that stems homelessness, women's issues, domestic violence.

01:35It's a huge issue in this country.

01:37It's never really been faced properly.

01:39And I think although some men should do it, few of them will not be addressing mental

01:43health.

01:45And I just feel that that's the important way to go on that.

01:48I don't think my boat should be swayed, I've already made up my mind.

01:52I'll be starting to grow up.

01:53I think we need to protect Australia.

01:58Get heavier on the crimes and the sentencing.

02:03And also, we need more police in every state across Australia.

02:08They're stretched to a limit.

02:09So I'd say definitely crime, because crime leads to drugs, leads to homelessness, which

02:18leads back to crime again.
