The genre of your film is horror, thriller, suspense.
00:03
In Hollywood now, you're more noticeable for the substance.
00:07
And their reaction is, finally, there's an acting piece for horror, suspense.
00:14
Do you think, locally speaking, it's harder to be noticed as an actress if that is your genre?
00:20
I think, ultimately, if that were the goal, it is really very difficult to achieve.
00:25
I think for us, or at least I'd like to speak for myself,
00:29
in terms of being recognized, it is something that just follows.
00:35
At least for me.
00:36
The main goal for me is really to affect the audience.
00:39
That's what I always think about.
00:42
If you think, okay, you're a monster, and you think,
00:48
you need to be noticed when you're here, when you act here,
00:51
or you need to be recognized when you act here,
00:54
it's really hard to be at par with the kind of standard that you're putting up for yourself.
00:59
I'd like to think that any particular project, movie like ours,
01:04
is always a collaborative effort.
01:06
While I want to top the best that I have done prior to this project,
01:11
I also don't want to take away the amazing abilities of those I am working with at the moment.
01:18
I am part of, so I'm a member of the academy for IMs.
01:23
I judge for them.
01:24
I judge also for Asian Academy almost yearly,
01:28
and also a permanent member of the Asian Academy.
01:31
So when you are part of an academy and award-giving bodies that are international,
01:36
you get to see the whole different world that they can also offer.
01:41
So you can see the difference of what we do here in the Philippines,
01:45
and the difference in everything.
01:55
So the timing of everything is also different.
01:59
And much as I want to compare my timing to theirs,
02:02
and even our timing as a film industry in the Philippines to theirs,
02:09
we are still far from that.
02:11
To be frank, in terms of technicality, it's really hard.
02:15
The equipment they use, we are striving always for that.
02:21
Which means money.
02:22
Yeah, and training.
02:24
Because in Hollywood, they only take one film a year, two, maybe the most.
02:31
They have time to prepare, lose the weight, gain the weight, transform.
02:36
While in the Philippines, we're not as fortunate just yet.
02:40
I'd like to believe that we'll also get there.
02:42
Because we adapt so fast.
02:44
We really need people to trust us.
02:48
And if we don't have money from here,
02:51
why won't we be open to producers?
03:08
So you can see, it's not just caretakers.
03:13
I know that the premise is to really bring caretakers outside of the country,
03:21
so to your question,
03:24
I feel that when it comes to acting in terms of an actress,
03:30
you can't compare them to how they do it abroad
03:34
because their stories are different.
03:36
Substance, when you do it here,
03:38
our reception is different, I would assume.
03:41
There's a correlation because I haven't watched it yet.
03:44
But I'm sure you get what I mean.
03:46
It's really different.
03:48
Because their culture is different from ours.
03:50
And our gauges are different.
03:52
I'd like to think that Filipinos,
03:55
it's not the same playing field.
03:58
It's not higher, it's not lower, it's not equal,
04:02
but it's different.
04:03
Because our storytelling as people, as actors,
04:07
are so different from how they tell their stories.
04:10
So once we get a hold of who we truly are,
04:14
as artists, as creative, as Filipino,
04:17
having that DNA in all of us,
04:19
and not be able to compare our work
04:21
to the kind of work that they do,
04:23
what they achieve, what gets recognized there,
04:25
that's when we will all really truly thrive as a film industry.
04:30
Because we can embrace fully what we can give.
04:37
It's hard because when you watch it,
04:39
I get what you mean.
04:41
Acting here,
04:43
you do it now after so many decades.
04:46
But it's really hard.
04:50
My question is, in the Philippines,
04:52
do you think that when your piece is a suspense or horror,
04:55
is it more difficult for you to like,
04:58
to consider for acting, whatever?
05:02
I truly understand your point,
05:05
and I love it and I do agree with everything that Dimkos has said.
05:09
But I have a very precise answer to your question.
05:15
Because this is partly my main genre.
05:20
Horror and suspense, perhaps.
05:25
And I have been recognized,
05:28
and I say this with all gratitude and humility,
05:32
not arrogance.
05:36
It was in Sigaw that I received
05:41
my Urian Award for Best Supporting Actress.
05:47
I haven't had another one since then.
05:49
I've done a lot of drama films.
05:52
So I think for you, it's easier.
05:54
It's not easier.
05:58
I'll get to that later.
06:00
And then in Bliss,
06:02
that was when I received a citation in Osaka.
06:06
And that is like a suspense horror kind of film.
06:14
So it's not really always about the genre.
06:19
It is about the story.
06:21
It is about how you did in that film.
06:28
It's the role.
06:30
It's the timing.
06:32
It's...
06:35
It's a lot of things.
06:37
But to say that it is harder to be recognized,
06:42
because maybe what they're talking about is like
06:45
mainstream horror.
06:47
But I think suspense, like a David Lynch film,
06:50
would probably be kind of like suspense.
06:53
No, it shouldn't be hard.
06:55
But maybe how...
06:57
If you compare it to a drama of a Meryl Streep,
07:02
but of course, it really depends on the material.
07:07
So, and the role.
07:09
And again, Demi Moore, maybe playing this before,
07:12
would not have been able to deliver as much.
07:14
I don't know.
07:15
I don't know her personally.
07:17
But maybe it is really timing.
07:20
It came to her hands at the perfect time.
07:22
And then in terms of just...
07:28
Because Dimples touched on this,
07:30
which is not part of your question per se.
07:34
But us Filipinos, knowing who we are,
07:39
and really staying true to our roots,
07:43
and really, I think, telling Filipino stories,
07:48
and then being funded by the Philippines,
07:51
and even properly funded.
07:54
I think Filipino talent, I really will say,
08:01
is worthy of and is capable of doing so many things.
08:09
If it's talent, we do not lack that.
08:13
But we are getting, every year, closer and closer to...
08:18
Always just getting better.
08:20
But we, I think, are at the cusp of just...
08:28
We always say, Korea, how did Korea do this?
08:31
I think we are very capable of bringing our culture
08:35
and our talent outside of the Philippines,
08:39
whether it be regional or on the global platform.
08:41
I think we can really be at par
08:45
with how excellent we are in terms of talent.
08:49
Now, the other things, we are working on them.
