Tim The Yowie Man explores the mysterious ‘cheese caves’

Man-made dungeons, known as the ‘cheese caves’, hidden at a creek near the Shoalhaven Gorge.

00:00The village of Talong, about 30 minutes drive northeast of Goulburn, is known for a few things

00:06including its Big Apple, its out-of-place Canberra bus shelter,

00:13and its commanding views of the Shoalhaven River.

00:16But arguably one of the more unusual sights in Talong are these dungeons, these man-made caves

00:32hacked out of underneath a waterfall, presumably by convicts in the early 1800s.

00:38They are nicknamed the Cheese Caves as there is speculation

00:42they were made for an early farmer to store his cheese in.

00:48Local legend suggests they may have also been used as convict cells for the very convicts

00:54that made them. However there's no firm evidence to support either theory.

01:02So what's their purpose? Well that remains a mystery, at least for now.
