Tucker Carlson was caught making misogynistic and crude comments in a past audio clip. We have Madeline Peltz to thank for the revelation — and she tells Brut why it was important to make it public.

00:00I just think that it's time for him to be held responsible
00:04for the sensationalized racism
00:07that has helped him fail up in his career.
00:10♪♪
00:17I've been at Media Matters for about two years,
00:19and I've been covering Tucker Carlson for about 18 months,
00:22which means I watch his show every night.
00:25And I have done a lot of background research
00:29into how his program developed into what it is today.
00:33And these files were online, and we found them.
00:37It just turned out that there was a lot that I thought,
00:40that we at Media Matters thought
00:42that the public would be interested in.
00:43♪♪
00:51Iraq is a crappy place filled with a bunch of, you know,
00:54semi-literate, primitive monkeys.
00:57The rapist, in this case, has made a lifelong commitment
01:00to live and take care of the person.
01:02So it is a little different.
01:03I mean, let's just be honest about it.
01:05It was very alarming and shows a very poor judgment
01:10that he thought that this is something
01:12that was appropriate to say into the microphone.
01:15But I wasn't really surprised
01:16because he spews this kind of hatred every night on his show.
01:20♪♪
01:30I think the protest was very important.
01:32It was a demonstration
01:34while Fox News had brought in their few remaining advertisers
01:38as a means to convince them to buy more ad real estate.
01:41It was an emergency meeting because they're bleeding revenue
01:45and the value of their ad real estate
01:48has gone down significantly.
01:49And so that's why we think that people should be
01:53politely letting advertisers know
01:55that they are their customers
01:57and that they don't support
01:58the extremely unpopular Fox News agenda.
02:00♪♪
02:04He's not a victim.
02:06He holds one of the most powerful microphones
02:09in right-wing media,
02:10and that claiming victimhood status
02:12is just a longstanding tactic of racists and white nationalists
02:16to portray themselves as under attack
02:19from some sort of outside agitated group.
02:22I think that if he loses his job at Fox,
02:25he'll still be fine
02:26because he has a massive industrial fortune
02:28that he stands to inherit.
02:30There's no real suffering involved.
02:32This is just being held accountable
02:34for his professional actions.
