Church Screens LGBTQ Cartoon After Alabama Bans Episode

After Alabama banned an episode of "Arthur" that features a gay wedding, a local church decided to spread the message of inclusion by showing the children's TV show.

00:00I think social justice is a really important part, a major part of the Christian tradition.

00:20And so, more than anything, we want to tell the LGBTQ community, especially young people,

00:26that you will be safe here, that you will be loved here.

00:28And so, after the controversy with Alabama Public Television choosing not to air the

00:33Arthur episode that had a gay wedding in it, Sidewalk approached us about hosting a screening.

00:40And this was in line with our mission of a church, both in terms of offering hospitality,

00:44but also, we believe very strongly in justice for all, including the LGBTQ community.

00:58You know, one of the reasons we're excited to show this Arthur viewing is because I have

01:15a six-year-old and a one-year-old.

01:17I want them to see two people of the same gender getting married as if it's a normal

01:22thing because I want it to be normal for them.

01:25And I think there's more and more opportunities for young people to experience that.

01:56So, I think specifically for the LGBTQ community, I think that community in particular has been

02:01harmed by the church, by religious communities.

02:03You know, to be perfectly honest, there was a time in my life when I would have maybe

02:08not publicly condemned an event like this, but wouldn't have agreed with it.

02:11And what led to my transformation was relationships with LGBTQ people, getting to know them, seeing

02:16the love that they had for their partners, their spouses.

02:19They wanted the same thing that I want.

02:21They wanted to be a part of a loving family.

02:22They wanted to be a part of a safe community.

02:25They wanted to be a part of a safe community.
