Governor Chris Christie conditionally vetoed a law that would have make marriage under 18 illegal in New Jersey. Marriage under 18 is legal in all the country.

00:00Our laws are more similar to Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, where they don't set a minimum age for marriage.

00:19Marriage before 18 is legal in all 50 U.S. states,

00:24and in 27 states the law does not even specify a minimum age below which a child cannot marry.

00:30It's not even as if this is a tiny problem happening in only one insular community.

00:36This is a widespread problem in the United States.

00:38I'm just not sure why people don't seem to be aware.

00:41A lot of legislators who insist that if a girl gets pregnant, as a teenager, she must get married.

00:58In several states where a pregnancy exception to the minimum marriage age has led to girls being forced to marry their own rapists.

01:11Marriage before 18 is not romantic and beautiful and happy. It is something ugly.
