00:00Because this is not about policy, this is personal.
00:11I'm the dad of a 10-year-old girl, Karina, who's here tonight.
00:15And the worst thing is knowing that your child might be worried
00:21about what could happen at school, a place that's supposed to be safe.
00:24I was born and raised in Oklahoma. I have three older brothers.
00:28They all joined the military. I had a dream growing up,
00:32and my dream was to be a public school teacher.
00:34There's something that sets me apart from all my colleagues running in this race,
00:38and that is for the last 21 years I've been raising a black son in America.
00:43And I have had to have very, very serious talks with my son Dante about how to protect himself
00:48on the streets of our city and all over this country, including how to deal with the fact
00:52that he has to take special caution because there have been too many tragedies between
00:57our young men and our police, too, as we saw recently in Indiana.
01:00I enlisted in the Army National Guard after the al-Qaeda terror attacks on 9-11,
01:05so I could go after those who had attacked us.
01:08You know, I'm very different than everyone else here on the stage.
01:10Prior to being in Congress, I was an entrepreneur.
01:13I started two businesses. I created thousands of jobs.
01:17I've had family members that have to unbolt a machine from the factory floor,
01:22put it in a box, and ship it to China.
