Fine particles, nitrogen and sulphur oxides: the fuel it uses is one of the dirtiest in the world. Here is the impact of maritime transport on the environment.
Transcript
00:00Thank you so much for joining us today.
00:30We know that the ultra-fine particles that are generated by the pollution of the ships
00:40increase the risk of heart attack.
00:42The suffering has an important impact on the health of the reefs and also on the health of the ocean
01:05because it contributes to the acidification of the ocean and we have less capacity to regulate the climate.
02:12By 2025, all new ships will be a massive 30% more energy efficient than those built last year.
02:27It's good news for the climate because better energy efficiency means a lower carbon footprint.
02:33And it's good news for people everywhere because shipping is the only sustainable transport method
02:39to support the world's growing population.
03:09What we're asking for is a change in fuel, that we put in particulate filters,
03:26and that the port takes responsibility by adapting the port taxes
03:31according to the environmental performance of the ships that arrive.
