Newcastle International Airport has unveiled plans for a significant expansion aimed at enhancing the passenger experience and addressing overcrowding, especially during peak travel times. The proposed three-storey extension to the airport’s eastern terminal is designed to increase capacity and improve essential areas, including baggage claim and the departure lounge.

00:21The plans include the installation of an additional baggage carousel to meet the

00:24growing demand from larger international flights such as those arriving from Dubai.

00:30This will help reduce delays and long waiting periods for passengers.

00:34Alongside this the departure lounge would be significantly expanded

00:38offering more seating and space for additional retail, food and drink outlets.

00:44These improvements are intended to ease congestion particularly during busy summer months.

00:49The aim is to create a more modern efficient space that caters the need of a growing number

00:53of passengers. The airport has submitted the plans to Newcastle City Council for approval

00:59with a decision expected soon. If granted the extension will be built to match the

01:04existing terminal's height. Newcastle International Airport has experienced a

01:08period of strong growth having reported its best ever result in 2023 with total revenues rising by

01:1422%. The airport's achievements were further recognised when it was named the overall winner

01:19at the 2024 World Routes Conference and crowned the best airport in the UK and Ireland at the

01:252024 Travel Industry Awards. There are still discussions around potential ownership changes

01:31of their remaining 49% stake currently held by infrastructure investment manager Infrabridge.

01:37However these meetings have been delayed and the identity of the potential buyer remains undisclosed.
