00:00Eastern Samar celebrated the 504th anniversary of the Philippine-Spanish contact

00:06where the goodwill and openness of our ancestors were given importance.

00:12This is the national news of V. Gumbaan of the Philippine Information Agency, Eastern Samar.

00:19In Eastern Samar, March 16, 1521 is not about the independence of the Philippines

00:26but about the mercy and openness of our ancestors.

00:31When the group of Ferdinand Magellan arrived on the island of Humonhon,

00:36they were hungry, tired, and ill.

00:39But instead of fighting them, the people of Suluan Island showed their kindness.

00:46They gave food, water, and help to the foreigners who were almost dead.

00:52To celebrate this important event,

00:55the Government of Eastern Samar and the LGU-GIWAN

00:59held a celebration for the 504th anniversary of the Philippine-Spanish contact.

01:06According to Eastern Visayas PCL President Ralph Vincent I. Verdone,

01:10it is important to remember this occasion

01:13because this is where our ancestors first showed their mercy to the foreigners.

01:18Along with the celebration, there was a social gathering in the community

01:22where the residents shared their food with the visitors.

01:26Just like what our ancestors showed to Magellan and his companions.

01:42Behind the celebration, the Humonhon Centennial Marker was built

01:47as a reminder of the importance of the island in our history.

01:51This is not just a story of Magellan's arrival,

01:54but a story of mercy, justice, and courage of the residents of Eastern Samar.
