Former EU military staff: Peace hard to achieve in Ukraine

Peace looks elusive in Ukraine, as the fighting continues and Russia maintains all its positions, the former director general of European Union military staff Lieutenant General David Leakey says.  #Ukraine #Russia

00:00The latest we're hearing is that Russia launched more than 170 drones at Ukraine overnight.

00:05Ukraine launched more than 130 drones at Russia overnight.

00:09I mean, peace looks as elusive as it's ever looked, doesn't it?

00:14It does. Both the facts on the ground, you've just pointed out these attacks that have taken place,

00:19and also confrontations on the ground, exchanges of artillery fire and frontline fighting.

00:25And also, in the political umbrella that hangs over all of this, or sits over all of this,

00:33President Putin appears to not to have conceded any of his political ambitions for prosecuting this war at all.

00:42In fact, most of the conditions he's set down are ones that protect his ability to continue prosecuting the war

00:50and deny the Ukrainians the opportunity, the sovereign opportunity, to defend their sovereign territory.

00:56So, I think the prospects for a peace are quite elusive at the moment and a long way off.

01:04And the prospects for a ceasefire also seem to be quite a long way off.
