We're seeing AI being used to digest data in real time, to monitor how a situation evolves.
00:05
For instance, to see how a wildfire propagates and grows so that people can evacuate in time.
00:13
We're also seeing AI being used to get situational awareness, to digest geolocated
00:20
social media posts, to see where first responders should go first to help people.
00:25
We're also seeing AI being used to detect changes in before and after imagery,
00:29
to see where damage was the worst.
00:33
Monique Kuglich heads a global UN initiative.
00:37
Its aim? To show both governments and organizations
00:40
how AI can help make people more resilient to natural disasters.
00:47

01:00
to reduce the impacts of disasters, but in a responsible way.
01:06
At the Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin,
01:08
her team is working on international standards for using AI in disaster management.
01:15
One major issue is transparency.
01:18
Users need to understand where the data comes from and how it gets analyzed.
01:24
Currently, every country has its own methods to monitor disasters.
01:29
Global standards could help improve cooperation.
01:35
Just to give an example, if you have a hurricane that's brewing in the Caribbean,
01:39
you have a lot of different states that are represented in the Caribbean.
01:43
If it's feasible to make sure that the, let's say if we have an AI-based forecasting system,
01:49
to make sure that it's interoperable with each other,
01:52
then you can have continuous coverage. That's incredible.
