00:00Five years after Greece's border crisis, fewer Syrian, Afghan and Egyptian migrants

00:05are trying to reach Europe through the Evros River.

00:08Those that do, are met with dozens of AI-equipped drones and motion detection cameras that will

00:14watch their every move.

00:15The Evros has become a testing ground for tech that may in future be used to protect

00:20Europe's borders.

00:22Right now we're talking about a major surveillance exercise that is actually an exercise that

00:27is coordinated and financed by the European Union.

00:31AI-powered or automated surveillance at the border is a relatively new concept, but one

00:36that 12 EU member states are already trying out.

00:41Migrants are being kind of used as guinea pigs really in this area, so all of the glitches

00:45with the systems, all of the possible problems and so on, have all become faults for migrants

00:51to deal with.

00:52Experts don't think AI will be the focus of migration talks at the EU summit, but they

00:57say further research is needed so the impact of AI at the border can be understood.
