The Fantastic Life of Minnie Rubinski at Nairn Little Theatre

A piece of exhibition theatre co-created by Nairn-born Symon Macintyre, The Fantastic Life of Minnie Rubinski was on show in Nairn.

00:00Always a pleasure to come back to the Little Theatre in Nairn.

00:11You know, I was born and brought up here and Nairn is, it's, my heart, definitely, part

00:18of my heart lives here and it's, I love bringing shows back and meeting old friends and, you

00:24know, following on in my family tradition of presenting theatre and entertainment in

00:29the small town.

00:30This is a show about Minnie Robinski and her amazing life and it is like a puzzle, like

00:38a jigsaw puzzle.

00:39We've collected 11 memories from Minnie Robinski's life and we've created little memory films

00:46about each memory and we've placed them around this giant brain and your job is to come into

00:53the installation and explore these memories and slowly put them together like putting

00:58together a jigsaw puzzle so when you finally get to the last one you go, wow, that's amazing,

01:04that's incredible.

01:06It's exciting to think there's a bit of a buzz about it and I know that from the past

01:12the more people who come to the first show the more they're going to tell all their friends

01:15and all their friends are going to come afterwards and it's so sold out that we can't get anybody

01:19else in.

01:20It's great.

01:21What I love about any production where the audience just doesn't sit on a seat and watch

01:29something happen in front of them is getting them actively involved and making them part

01:34of the show.

01:35So, I mean, nobody's going to do any acting in this but they have to explore it and find

01:41it out for themselves and I think these are kind of innovations in the theatre that get

01:45people back in and excite people about going to theatre and I love theatre and getting

01:50people involved in storytelling and that's what I want to do and it's especially important

01:55to come to smaller areas and to rural areas across Scotland, Nairn in particular because

02:00I have a connection to Nairn but other places, we just came from Skye just recently, where

02:06these sort of productions where they're not traditional theatre productions are seen and

02:12explored by the local community.

02:16I found it really moving, it was a really immersive experience walking into a room where

02:24you're basically entering into someone's mind and memories.

02:29When you're entering a mind you don't quite know what's real and what's not.

02:35For me, I found it really moving the snapshots into her life as a young mother.

02:40You also see her as she gets older.

02:42I would say moving, beautiful and sort of unforgettable, it's going to stick with me

02:48for a while.

02:49It's fantastic for us to be able to help bring arts to the community outwith the festival.
