00:02Well, the U.S. economy appears to be slowing,
00:05but experts are divided, and the signals are mixed.
00:14This week, when asked, President Donald Trump
00:17said he wasn't ruling out the possibility.
00:19Both Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan seem
00:22to think the odds of a recession have risen slightly,
00:24but others are more cautious, predicting slower growth
00:28but no immediate downturn.
00:30So what's behind all of this?
00:32Well, on the one hand, the job market remains strong,
00:36but if layoffs start rising and businesses pull back,
00:39that could change.
00:40And then there are some other factors,
00:43like flagging retail spending, wavering business confidence,
00:47low consumer confidence, and market volatility,
00:51which have some people raising the alarm.
00:54Some of this volatility is due to uncertainty
00:57surrounding President Trump's economic policies,
00:59including tariffs, though that's not the whole story.
01:03Well, many economists seem to agree
01:05the risk of recession is higher
01:08than it was a couple of years back,
01:10but for now, the world's top economy is still holding on.
