Conservatives are demanding that the £15m plans to close Park Street to cars and vans
00:08
should be abandoned. Greenlab Bristol City Council announced in January that a 24-hour
00:14
bus gate would be installed at the top of the road where it meets Park Row at Clifton
00:20
Triangle and a bus lane to run from the centre. Local businesses have formed a campaign group
00:26
called Save Park Street and launched a petition calling on the proposals to be scrapped.
00:34
The local businesses have stressed that it would kill the trade in the area and that
00:39
they would have no choice but to close up and move away as it would ultimately cause
00:44
less footfall in the area and significantly reduce business. Greens say that plans which
00:51
could include segregated cycleways, wider pavements and changes to the road layout
00:57
will ease traffic congestion and make bus services from White Ladies Road more punctual
01:03
and that it will also be better for pedestrians. But now, Clare John Groundland Conservative
01:10
Stoke Bishop has tabled a motion to full councils on Tuesday March 11th calling on the administration
01:17
to think again. He said that the scheme, part of the major upgrades of the A37, aimed
01:24
at improving times for travel and creating new and inviting public spaces, would be a
01:30
disaster because it effectively closed one of the main routes from North Bristol into
01:35
the city's centre, including access to the Cathedral, Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel and
01:41
College Street car park.
