This is a turning point in the EU's migration policy.
00:09
The European Commission has introduced a regulation that will allow member states to deport rejected
00:14
asylum seekers to Turk countries, even if they have never set foot in them, and detain
00:19
them in return hubs.
00:25
On the return hubs, we are creating the scope for member states, in a way, to explore new
00:34
solutions for returning.
00:36
Of course, only for people who have no right to stay in the European Union, we are creating
00:41
the legal frame.
00:42
We are not creating the content.
00:45
In 2024, 20 percent of the persons who were ordered to leave the EU were sent back to
00:50
their country of origin.
00:53
This Austrian MEP welcomes a proposal that would speed up returns.
00:57
This is outside the European Union, in third countries, which do respect, of course, human
01:03
rights and all the, I would say, values of civilization Europe wants to see respected,
01:10
can be good places and proper places for those who should return for a specific time, period
01:17
of time.
01:18
And this is what the Commission proposal addresses.
01:20
NGOs are sounding the alarm.
01:22
They denounce a punitive approach which opens the door to human rights violations and reinforces
01:27
the link between immigration and crime.
01:34
According to one Italian MEP, another point of contention is that people in an irregular
01:39
situation could be deported to countries with which they have no connection.
01:44
The European Commission would not be involved in the signing of these deals or in the construction
02:01
of return centers.
02:02
It lays the legal foundations that, if approved, would allow governments to pass agreements
02:07
with non-European countries ready to receive rejected asylum seekers in exchange for financial
02:13
incentives.
