PTV Sports is back and for our sports banter, we have Romeo Mislam, Jaren Baniares, and Vince Onang, our athletes and coaches for Jump Rope.
00:17
Good morning, gentlemen.
00:18
Good morning.
00:19
This morning is a bit interesting, right?
00:22
Jump Rope.
00:23
But first, how did you compete in Jump Rope?
00:29
Alright, so, Jump Rope as a competitive sport, a lot of people don't know that it can be a competitive sport.
00:39
So, basically, there are a lot of categories, but the main sport of Jump Rope is freestyle.
00:47
So, you're going to do a routine, different tricks, different difficulty, and yeah, that's where the sport of Jump Rope revolves.
00:56
I think last year, our Philippine Jump Rope team competed in China.
01:03
How was your experience in the competition in China, Romeo?
01:06
It was a super good experience.
01:09
China was also super good.
01:13
It was an open-minded competition.
01:17
Of course, it was surprising that there are so many competitors from different countries.
01:24
How about you, Jaren?
01:25
Although it was a lot of pressure, but since we brought the Philippines, we still did everything.
01:31
Can you tell us when you started competing?
01:36
How did you discover that you can compete in this sport?
01:41
So, I started in 2022, I think.
01:44
Yeah.
01:45
And then, I said, this is fun.
01:48
I said, I'll try to become an athlete.
01:49
And then, I continued.
01:51
So, yeah.
01:52
Yes.
01:53
So, I started during the pandemic.
01:56
So, at first, it was for health reasons.
02:00
And then, I discovered that Jump Rope is really wide.
02:04
And it really is competitive.
02:06
So, I'm a competitive person.
02:08
And it's really fun and competitive at the same time.
02:13
So, I really enjoyed it.
02:15
And you can really learn a lot when it comes to Jump Rope.
02:19
How about you, Romeo?
02:20
So, I started before the pandemic in 2020, in March.
02:24
And then, I discovered Tricks 2021 in Luxor.
02:28
So, our coach, Sir Ruben, and IJ, who is the Philippine head coach of PGRA, asked me if I wanted to be competitive or just for fun.
02:41
So, I'm competitive too.
02:43
I like challenges.
02:44
And Jump Rope is really good.
02:46
Because you can learn a lot from Jump Rope.
02:50
And, of course, it improves your coordination, timing, and mental health.
02:53
And it depends on something.
02:55
Partner, you know, I remember this.
02:58
During the pandemic, there were a lot of people who jumped on Jump Rope.
03:02
All sports were shut down.
03:03
All sports were shut down.
03:04
You can do it indoor or outdoor.
03:06
Even if it's virtual, you can do competitions because there's Jump Rope.
03:10
I remember this because there are a lot of people doing tricks on TikTok.
03:13
It's trending on Facebook, Facebook Reels, and IG Stories.
03:16
A lot of people are jumping on Jump Rope.
03:19
Were you one of those people?
03:21
Yes, were you also posting on Jump Rope during the pandemic?
03:24
Were you also trending on TikTok?
03:26
Yes, actually, that's where Jump Rope really started.
03:30
At first, it was just for fun.
03:32
And the people online, they have a lot of fun.
03:38
They're doing Jump Rope at the same time.
03:41
Dancing on it.
03:42
Some music and all.
03:43
And then, we discovered that it became a sport in other countries.
03:49
Like, the kids started as early as 4 or 5 years old to train.
03:56
But in the Philippines, the level is not like that yet.
04:00
So, it really started with Jump Dance.
04:06
Dancing with the rope.
04:08
Doing different fun tricks.
04:11
Footworks and all.
04:12
Actually, the community of Jump Rope is really nice.
04:15
I remember this, partner.
04:16
There are a lot of people.
04:17
If it's trending now, Jump Rope was really popular before.
04:23
Up until now, there are still a lot of people.
04:26
Actually, I also tried.
04:29
You just went there?
04:31
Actually, I'm a lazy person.
04:36
I discovered that I can't jump.
04:39
I don't have to jump anymore.
04:42
It's called rope flow.
04:44
Yes, rope flow.
04:46
It's like a jump rope, but it's not a jump.
04:48
You can't jump.
04:50
You don't have to jump too high?
04:51
You don't have to jump.
04:52
Even if it's just a towel, you're still like that.
04:55
That's scary.
04:56
Search for teammates, rope flow.
04:59
Maybe next time, we'll interview the rope flow lady.
05:03
Next week, I'll sample Paolo Salamat.
05:06
Jump Rope is interesting.
05:08
There are a lot of sports that have evolved.
05:11
But going back to the question,
05:14
can you share with us how you train?
05:19
Because I saw here that there are three of you.
05:24
There are two of you.
05:25
It's like a modern jump rope.
05:26
It's a double touch.
05:27
Yes.
05:28
It's also a competition.
05:31
There's a team and a pair of double touch.
05:35
And you're not just standing.
05:38
There's also a trick.
05:40
It's like you're pushing up.
05:42
It's not easy.
05:43
It's like a modern jump rope.
05:46
There are a lot of people involved.
05:53
In jump rope, you can dance.
05:55
But at the same time, you can do gymnastics.
05:57
There are a lot of areas that you can hit.
06:03
There are many types of pillars.
06:05
Power, footwork, releases.
06:08
In rope flow, it's like controlling the rope.
06:12
Even if you're not jumping, you're controlling the rope.
06:14
And then we have multiples.
06:17
I think those are the double unders, triple unders.
06:22
There are quads.
06:24
Four rotations in one jump.
06:34
Since you mentioned that you're training different kinds of tricks.
06:39
Of course, there are different divisions.
06:41
There are single spheres.
06:42
What are your preparations for this year?
06:44
Since last year, you came from China.
06:46
For this year, what are the upcoming competitions for jump rope?
06:49
This July 26 to August 3.
06:52
There's IGRU, which is International Jump Rope Committee.
06:55
There's IOT, which is International Open Tournament,
07:00
and World Open Tournament.
07:02
Where will it be held?
07:03
It will be held in Japan, in Kurtsukawasari.
07:06
It's the same venue as last year.
07:09
Maybe we'll be invited.
07:11
Maybe we'll be invited to a jump rope competition.
07:13
Jaren, how many years have you been joining jump rope?
07:18
What's the most important thing for you in jump rope?
07:21
Health-wise, and of course, being an athlete.
07:24
For me, it boosted my confidence.
07:26
Since they told me,
07:28
you're fat, you can't do this, you can't do that.
07:30
That's when I realized that I can do it.
07:34
That's when my confidence boosted.
07:36
For servants, you've mentioned earlier that
07:39
this was just for health purposes before for you.
07:43
How did this become healthy for you?
07:49
During the pandemic, I grew up.
07:53
Of course, there were no activities, just eating.
07:57
It's an intense workout.
08:02
It's more intense than running.
08:04
It can burn a lot of calories.
08:07
It helped me a lot.
08:09
First, I lost weight.
08:13
Second, mentally.
08:15
Third, my emotions changed.
08:21
My mood changed.
08:23
Overall, holistically, it can help you.
08:27
Physically and mentally?
08:28
Yes.
08:29
For Sir Romeo.
08:31
Sir Romeo, how did this jump rope help you?
08:35
Since it's an intense cardio,
08:37
it can improve your coordination, timing,
08:41
presence of mind,
08:43
picking up things,
08:45
your choreography,
08:47
and your confidence.
08:49
I don't know how to dance,
08:51
but with the jump rope, I can dance.
08:54
With the two left feet on the jump rope.
08:58
You can dance.
09:01
If you want to challenge yourself,
09:05
and get rid of your stress,
09:07
use the jump rope.
09:08
Let's talk about your competitions.
09:11
Can you tell us about your upcoming competitions,
09:14
tournaments, preparations,
09:16
and what are you aiming for?
09:21
For the Philippines,
09:25
there's a competition called Jump Dance.
09:28
I think it's the third year now.
09:31
It's good for beginners.
09:35
Everyone is welcome.
09:38
If you want to try jump rope as a sport,
09:42
it's a perfect opportunity.
09:44
I think it's going to be in May.
09:46
It's the national competition here in the Philippines.
09:50
Technically, it's a group.
09:54
Different groups.
09:56
You're going to dance with the rope,
09:59
with the music and all.
10:01
When it comes to international competitions,
10:03
there's IGRU.
10:05
After that, there's IGRU.
10:07
There's also China.
10:08
There are lots of other competitions,
10:10
like Thailand, Singapore,
10:12
and Korea.
10:14
My main focus is IGRU.
10:17
There are a lot of countries there.
10:19
IGRU, International Jump Rope Union.
10:22
Where will this be held?
10:25
IGRU is in Japan.
10:27
We're looking forward to it.
10:29
Good luck with your competition this year.
10:31
For our teammates,
10:33

10:35

10:39
And of course, message to all your teammates.
10:41

11:19
And then, I really want to invite everyone
11:23
to support the Philippine athletes of jump rope.
