All right we have some news coming in this morning. Former central banker Mark
00:04
Carney has become Canada's next Prime Minister after the governing Liberal
00:09
Party elected him its leader its leader on Sunday. With this President Donald
00:15
Trump's trade war and annexation threat and a federal election looms, Carney 59
00:22
replaces Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who announced his resignation in January
00:27
but remains Prime Minister until his successor is sworn in in the next few
00:31
days. Carney won in a landslide winning 85.9% of the vote. We'll be getting you
00:37
more updates on that big story but we're talking about the announcement of the
00:42
former central banker Mark Carney as the new Canadian Prime Minister as a
00:46
successor to Justin Trudeau.
00:50
The Canadian government has rightly retaliated and is rightly retaliating
00:55
with our own tariffs that will have maximum impact in the United States and
01:00
minimum impact here in Canada. My government will keep our tariffs on
01:06
until the Americans show us respect.
01:12
All right I'm going to go straight across to Shashank Mattu for more details
01:16
on that story at this point in time. Shashank just take us to the highlights
01:20
of this new appointment the former central banker is the new Prime Minister
01:24
of Canada. Yeah so Mark Carney is the former governor of the Bank of Canada
01:32
and the Bank of England. He's widely acknowledged to be a rock star
01:36
economist that's the label that's often assigned to him. He was very much an
01:40
outsider in this year's election campaign. There have been rumors swirling
01:44
for several years that Mark Carney was considering a jump into electoral
01:48
politics. Justin Trudeau had earlier tried to recruit him as his finance
01:53
minister but Mark Carney always had his eye on becoming Prime Minister with an
01:57
ambition that he has now achieved in his speech. You know he has had this unique
02:02
opportunity both of replacing Justin Trudeau and distancing himself from
02:06
Justin Trudeau's legacy in some ways because Trudeau has become extremely
02:10
unpopular given the fact that the Liberal Party is now headed into an
02:13
election. It needs to keep a majority in place and it is facing a tough challenge
02:18
from the opposition Conservative Party. So Mark Carney in his victory speech used
02:23
his credentials as an economist, distanced himself from a lot of
02:26
proposals that have made Justin Trudeau extremely unpopular but he also promised
02:30
to stand up to Donald Trump who is President of the United States and who in the
02:35
minds of many Canadians is trying to bully Canada by saying that it will
02:39
become America's 51st state and so on and so forth. This has given a major poll
02:43
boost to Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party and now Mark Carney has to take up
02:47
that mantle and lead the party to an election victory. So definitely an
02:51
outsider coming in from nowhere and has taken up the mantle of leadership of
02:56
the Liberal Party and will now become Canada's Prime Minister.
02:59
Alright I'm gonna thank you Shashank Mattu getting us those details and putting
03:03
that important story into perspective a new appointment in Canada and the
03:07
impact of fit as par as the relationship between America and Canada is concerned.
