Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most iconic, beloved,
00:10
and stunning Pokémon Mega Evolution moments in the franchise's anime, films, and specials.
00:24
Number 10 – Mega Debut
00:27
Released in Japan in 2013, this short film led into Pokémon The Movie, Genesect, and
00:33
The Legend Awakened. In it, we see fan-fave, legendary Pokémon Mewtwo able to switch into
00:50
its Mega Mewtwo Y-Form without a keystone as it battles against the villainous hunter
00:56
Dirk. This introduction to Mewtwo's Mega Form gave rise to speculation online that
01:07
this was the fabled Mewthree. Over in the West, the prologue didn't come out in the
01:12
US until 2014, so their introduction to Mega Evolution would have likely been in the following
01:18
Genesect flick, where Mega Mewtwo Y battled it out with the shiny insectoid.
01:34
Number 9 – Mega to the Rescue
01:44
As soon as Ash took his first step into Kalos, we were already catching glimpses of Mega
01:49
Evolution Pokémon waiting in the wings. In the next episode, Ash tried to calm a rampaging
02:02
Garchomp on top of Lumiose Tower. However, Pikachu fell off it, causing Ash to dive after
02:09
him. Seemingly looking like Ash and Pikachu were about to be brutally written out of the
02:13
anime, a stunning, fiery globe flew across and caught them with ease, conjured by Mega
02:20
Blaziken. Sure, his trainer, the so-called Blaziken Mask, is a little cringe, but we'll
02:32
take any chance to see Blaziken strut their stuff.
02:38
Number 8 – Old Faces, New Megas
02:41
Old-school Pokémon fans will never recognize any human partners for Ash except Brock and
02:47
Misty. After Ash and his Alolan crew take a trip to Kanto, we get to witness Brock take
02:53
on Kiawe for a battle. During it, the Nurse Joy fan brought out his Steelix against Kiawe's
03:01
has a slight advantage. However, Brock turned the contest on its head by Mega Evolving Steelix,
03:14
only after he took his top off dramatically, giving him the win. Then, it was time for
03:27
Misty to fight Ash. She pulled out her Gyarados and Mega Evolved it against Pikachu. Despite
03:34
this, Ash used a Z-Move to win. On the plus side, at least Misty finally got her Mega
03:39
Gyarados, and it's always nice to see the OG ship demonstrate their skills. Shut up,
03:46
you know it's true.
03:53
Number 7 – Legendary Megas Everywhere
03:57
What's better than one Mega Evolution? A legendary one. What's better than that?
04:02
How about three of them? In this bombastic smorgasbord of a movie, the titular mythical
04:07
Pokémon has to fight its shadow counterpart. With both possessing the ability to use their
04:17
rings as portals, Poopa calls upon Latios, Latias, and Shiny Rayquaza for help. Shadow
04:23
responds by summoning six legendaries, including Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre, which feels
04:30
like cheating. To beef up the power on their side, Latios, Latias, and Rayquaza all Mega
04:43
Evolve. Nothing will ever be cooler than a Mega Evolve Rayquaza with a black and gold
04:51
machine.
04:52
Number 6 – Ash's Mega Lucario Debut
05:06
When the dynamaxing, gigantamaxing gimmick was introduced, discussions erupted among
05:11
fans about whether that or Mega Evolution was better. Well, this clash certainly proved
05:17
one party right. During their World Coronation series, Ultra Class Battle, Bea was down to
05:23
her Machamp, while Ash had Lucario left. As the fighting specialist gigantamaxed her Pokémon,
05:30
Ash switched things up into High Gear and Mega Evolved Lucario.
05:56
The Aura Pokémon took so much damage in the battle, yet Lucario still managed to hold
06:02
off Machamp's signature G-Max move. Seeing the opportunity to strike, it climbed up the
06:07
vastly bigger Machamp and ended it then and there.
06:19
Number 5 – Red's Charizard X
06:22
Pokemon Origins took the story from the video games, Pokémon Red and Blue, and made a delightful
06:28
anime version of it. In the final episode, after Red's Charizard defeated Blue's
06:40
Blastoise to become champion, he went off to catch them all, leading him to Mewtwo.
06:45
The battle didn't initially go well, as Mewtwo took out Red's team, leaving him
06:50
with only Charizard. When the Fire Lizard was thrown into its trainer, both plummeted
06:55
into the water below. As hope seemed lost, Red and Charizard displayed their bond, igniting
07:02
Mega Evolution. Now, with Mega Charizard X, they defeat Mewtwo, capture it, and do what
07:16
Ash should have done since the first series.
07:26
Number 4 – Korrina's over-amped Lucario
07:30
While Mega Evolution is super cool and turns the Pokémon into powerhouses, the effect
07:35
the change has on the creatures is often overlooked. After all, plenty of Pokédex entries mention
07:42
the pain they experience. When Korrina gets Lucario to Mega Evolve, it starts off fine.
07:49
But then, like flicking a switch, Lucario goes full-on savage and wipes out Pikachu.
08:00
It ignores Korrina's demands, as it goes out of its way to try and permanently replace
08:05
Pikachu as the true Pokémon mascot. While it would later learn to control its rage,
08:16
this is a standout demonstration that, in the right conditions, a Pokémon can be driven
08:22
to kill.
08:28
Number 3 – Mega Sceptile vs. Ash Greninja
08:32
While technically it's Bond Phenomenon and not Mega Evolution, we essentially get two
08:37
beloved Pokémon battling it out at their mega-best. Throughout the series, the unique
08:51
relationship between Ash and Greninja causes the Frog Ninja to turn into Ash Greninja – some
08:57
kind of mental bond that the anime kind of pulls out its ass. But it's still awesome
09:03
to behold. Taking on Sawyer in the semi-finals of the Kalos League, both trainers trigger
09:08
their Pokémon's strongest forms for a final showdown. Despite Ash Greninja having a type
09:14
disadvantage, it puts up one hell of a fight. With help from the environment and its speed,
09:30
Ash Greninja releases a huge water shuriken strong enough to shred through a leaf storm.
09:36
As the dust from the impact settled, Ash Greninja stood tall.
09:48
Number 2 – Steven's Mega Shiny
09:50
Not every Pokémon champion leaves a big impact, but Steven, with his passion for rocks, is
09:56
something else. Throughout the Kalos series, the anime released Mega Evolution specials,
10:02
which starred Alain trying to better his Mega Evolution skills and learn more about
10:06
the phenomenon. In the second special, Steven is introduced. With the Charizard user obsessed
10:24
with battling anyone with a keystone, he immediately challenged the champion. After accepting,
10:30
we got to see what a shiny Metagross looks like in battle. Even with the type disadvantage,
10:35
which made Alain cocky, Metagross was a force to be reckoned with. If it wasn't for Lysander
10:50
interrupting, Steven might have won.
11:14
Number 1 – Charizard X vs Charizard Y
11:32
As one of the most popular Pokémon to walk the animated planet, whenever Charizard is
11:37
on screen, it's always a treat. But throw in an additional Charizard and mix in two
11:43
different Mega Evolutions, and it's amazing. The Kalos League's Lumiose Conference played
11:48
host to a battle between Trevor and Alain, both high-tiered Charizard users. Both opened
12:12
with their Fire Lizards, soon going up a level with Trevor's Mega Charizard Y and
12:17
Alain's Mega Charizard X. The two behemoths went through a litany of moves, dodging and
12:23
chipping away at each other's health. Though in the end, Charizard X and its superior drip
12:29
won the day. If you could give any Pokémon a Mega Evolution, which doesn't have one
12:47
already, what would you pick? Nidoking? Flygon? Mew? Pachirisu? Let us know in the comments
12:54
below.
