Deadstock General Store: A wonderful shop to spend time in

Today we went down to Deadstock General Store to talk to owner, Liam, about the shop and why it’s such a popular spot for browsing Mancs.

00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester world. My name is Theo Huston-Betts and today

00:03I'm on my way to one of my favorite shops in Manchester and that is Deadstock General Store.

00:09Now if you've been in there before you'll know exactly why I love it so much.

00:13It's this brilliant little store which sort of feels like a cross between retro and

00:18ultra-modern with a massive range of really cool homeware, kitchenware, gardenware, an amazing range of wonderful things.

00:25So I'm going to go there, talk to Liam, the owner, about the store and why it's so special.

00:30Hi, I'm Liam Jackson from Deadstock General Store. It's just evolved over time.

00:34We sort of started out with a quite small with a few bits, mainly products

00:39just that we like ourselves with no real theme at all and as our tastes change, the stock changes.

00:47So hopefully that keeps it fresh as well. Picking things is kind of like just shopping for ourselves.

00:52But also it feels natural as well. It's not like we're not trying to buy something we think, oh, this will sell really well or

01:00oh, let's buy more of those kind of things. We're literally just buying whatever

01:04we think is cool. And we don't have much space either. So actually always looking to get rid of things, to add new things.

01:11If we've been with something for five years plus

01:15we're a bit bored of it and then we're happy to move on.

01:19But actually, like I say, we do have a small shop. So we do have to sort of

01:25cut things out now and again. We'll be 10 years this year in May.

01:30I was in fashion design before that. I guess I like shopping but hate shopping at the same time because most shops are pretty

01:39dull. But I certainly can remember certain shops or certain times where you just go into a shop and sort of lose yourself for an hour.

01:46And I've definitely had those experiences in shops in the past. And I think that's the main

01:53criteria of what we're trying to do.

01:55There's enough going on, I think, which we don't

01:58when we sort of stand back from it because we're in there every day. I think there's a lot of product.

02:04We kind of think of it as a mini department store. So there's a department store, but like a really tiny version of it.

02:10So yeah, skincare, perfume,

02:13kitchenware, home fragrance or candles, incense,

02:17ceramics, cups, mugs, sunglasses, umbrellas, hats, gloves,

02:24accessories, socks. We do lots of socks. Very nice Japanese socks. They're very good. Little tiny incense houses.

02:32They're nice. Vases, clocks,

02:35watches, key rings.

02:37It's full to the brim.

02:39Yeah, I come high. Keep them dry.
