Macron says Ukraine-Russia truce possible in the coming weeks

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday, February 24th, that a truce between Ukraine and Russia could be reached in the coming weeks. 00:00First, to have a truce, I think it could be done in the weeks to come.

00:05We want peace.

00:06And I think the initiative of President Trump is a very positive one.

00:09Be careful, because we need something substantial for Ukraine, but for the security of Europe

00:14and France.

00:16And second, let's work together on the future to preserve security guarantees, meaning to

00:21be sure that this peace will be respected by Russia.

00:24So we have to negotiate with the U.S., with the allies, with Ukraine, which type of security

00:30guarantee makes sense.

00:31It could be, first, increase the capacities of Ukraine to maintain a strong army.

00:37We worked very hard together with the U.K. prime minister to have a French-U.K. proposal

00:44to say we are ready to send troops, not to go to the front line, not to go in confrontation,

00:51but to be in some locations, being defined by the treaty, as a presence to maintain this

00:57peace and our collective credibility with the U.S. backup and the U.S. backstop.
