Greenhouse emissions: Which countries are reporting the biggest decreases?
EU greenhouse gas emissions fell between Q3 2023 and Q3 2024, mostly due to reductions in the electricity and gas supply chain.

Greenhouse gas emissions in the EU are going down, but only marginally.

The latest Eurostat data on greenhouse gas emissions is out and it seems relatively good

news for the EU. Emissions decreased by 0.6% between the third quarter of 2023 and the third

quarter of 2024, totalling 767 million tonnes. The result was mostly driven by a large reduction

in emissions generated by the electricity and gas supply chain, minus 6.7%, and more marginally

by the transportation and storage sector, minus 0.9%. However, the result was solute by emission

increases in water supply and waste management, as well as general services, mining and quarrying.

Emissions went down in 16 EU member states, particularly in Austria, minus 7.8%, Hungary

and Denmark. On the other hand, Lithuania reported the highest increase, plus 7.8%,

followed by Luxembourg with 6.6% and Sweden with 6%.
