00:00Government spokesman Fahmy Faydal today hit out at the claim by an opposition MP that

00:06a proposed anti-racial discrimination law could lead to racial riots, describing it

00:11as irresponsible.

00:14He said the remark by Ahmad Marzook Sha'ari of PAS was also provocative.

00:19He said that as a Member of Parliament, he should be more responsible and not fan racial

00:23sentiments or raise such issues.

00:26He added that MPs should use the Dewan Rakyat to promote unity rather than stoke fear among

00:31Malaysians.

00:33Marzook said yesterday that the anti-discrimination law, proposed by DAP's Lim Guan Eng, could

00:38trigger a repeat of the May 13, 1969 racial riots.

00:43He said such legislation could serve as the backdoor for the abolition of Bumi Pujar rights

00:47and privileges, which would disrupt Malaysia's racial harmony.

00:52Lim had proposed an anti-racial discrimination act in light of racial issues involving political

00:57figures and extremists, citing a recent incident involving a corn seller who displayed a sign

01:02containing a racist slur against Indians in Sepang.
