Zin Mar Aung: 'Myanmar's junta losing control'

In an interview with DW at the Munich Security Conference, the opposition National Unity Government's foreign minister said that the Myanmar junta lacks legitimacy to hold elections.

00:00First thing is that military junta doesn't have the right to convene, right to hold the

00:13elections.

00:14And another thing is like military junta is losing on the ground.

00:20There is more than around the 70% of the territory, the revolutionary control area.

00:29How can they do?

00:30How can they hold the election in this circumstance?

00:33Another thing is legitimacy.

00:34They don't have the legitimacy to hold the election.

00:40Actually the people, the voters against military rules and of course military hold elections.

00:50The revolutionary forces are fighting together with NUG.

00:54NUG is not alone actually.

00:56NUG plus ethnic organizations, they are also fighting for their self-determinations.

01:02At the same time that is why we have the political dialogue among different stakeholders with

01:07different ethnic groups for the future federal union.

01:10So in this regard politically we are on the same page even though we are fighting on different

01:16territory but our common enemy is very clearly a military junta.

01:22Actually I'm not agree on that because protection of civilians is of course our responsibility.

01:29So that is why we are providing the assistance for the civilian protection.

01:34But the thing is that we need to think reversely because the military junta indiscriminately

01:39attack the people like not just only the military post of the NUG and revolutionary forces.

01:47They are attacking civilians.

01:49So the thing is like we are not able to, it is not about our capacity not to protect

01:56the civilian.

01:57They don't have the rules and they don't have military code of conduct.

02:01They don't have the ethic.

02:03So that is why because of the military junta and discrimination they are not fighting against

02:10military to military.

02:11They are fighting against their own civilian.

02:13In terms of the NUG we have the program to take actions for this accountability who committed

02:25that kind of crimes.

02:27We have the normal tolerance on that.

02:29We have the mechanism to address that issue.

02:37The first decision about the Myanmar is still emergency agenda for the U.S. national security.

02:44It is very specific country.

02:46But in terms of the U.S. A&E it is a worldwide effort.

02:49So in this regard even though NUG doesn't have a directly support or effort from that

02:55aid, U.S. aid, but indirectly effort for those who are living across the borders or humanitarian

03:03assistance.

03:05Recently I have noticed that in the scene there was a ceremony because of the U.S. A&E

03:11cuts support so the human suffering is still happening.

03:16So in this regard I think Trump administration will consider about that.
