A Westgate road said to be Kent's most dangerous sees calls for more cameras

Campaigners are asking Kent County Council to implement more cameras where a woman was killed and another injured at a pedestrian crossing.  Watch more on The Kent Morning Show.

00:00Now the time's just gone, half past seven in the morning.

00:03Now a road in Westgate-on-Sea has been labelled as one of Kent's most dangerous, as campaigners

00:07are asking Kent County Council to implement more cameras, and it comes after a woman was

00:12killed at a pedestrian crossing.

00:13Yeah, 71-year-old Julia Thomas died earlier this year when a Ford Fiesta hit two adults

00:18on the A28 Canterbury Road, a second woman was also seriously injured.

00:23Well let's take a look at that petition now and some of the details, Bartholomew, you

00:27have more on this?

00:29Yeah, that's right, it was set up by Michael Grantham, I'll actually be speaking with him

00:32later on in the programme.

00:34We can bring you some pictures in just a moment of what that petition looks like online and

00:40part of that road.

00:41So the A28 in Westgate-on-Sea, people who live there say that they've often seen issues

00:47with people speeding.

00:48Michael Grantham is asking for average speed cameras and red light cameras and more pedestrian

00:54lighting to improve safety.

00:56You can see what the road looks like just there.

01:00This is actually the crossing where Julia Thomas, the 71-year-old, died in January this

01:04year after being hit and you can obviously see floral tributes left there for her.

01:11In terms of that incident, police say they're still investigating the crash and no arrests

01:15have been made, but more than 400 people have signed this petition.

01:20If it gets to 750 signatures, we can see it on the screen there on change.org, then

01:25Kent County Council will debate whether or not it will think about putting in some of

01:33those measures.

01:34Obviously we know we've reported on speed cameras in the past.

01:38Speed cameras can only be put in when there's been a certain amount of fatal injuries at

01:42a certain part of the highway.

01:44We can read a short statement from the council now.

01:48Kent County Council says, we were sorry to hear about the incident on the A28 Canterbury

01:52Road.

01:53Our thoughts are with those affected.

01:54KCC is reviewing the detailed report from Kent Police following the crash at the Canterbury

01:58Road-Minster Road junction.

02:01Once the petition is submitted, KCC will undertake a detailed review of what is being requested

02:06and petitions submitted to KCC are processed in accordance with the petition scheme.

02:10So obviously more about that can be read on the Kent County Council website.

02:14Let's hear from Michael Grantham now, who was speaking with one of our reporters in

02:19Westgate.

02:20So, we're talking 70 miles an hour, certainly, probably even faster for the bikes.

02:29The issue there is we have a number of turns onto the main road, so people turning right

02:34onto the main road from side roads, and if one of those is heading for them and they

02:41don't register how fast they're going, one day there will be a serious accident.
