EU leaders meet in Paris over US shift on Ukraine

00:00European countries need to do more for their collective security.

00:05That's the growing consensus among key leaders who are convening in Paris on Monday, according

00:10to French authorities.

00:12There is a wind of unity blowing over Europe, as we perhaps have not felt since the Covid

00:19period.

00:21Europeans were united last Wednesday in Paris, this weekend in Munich, and on Monday around

00:26the President of the Republic.

00:28The emergency summit will host representatives from the UK, Germany, Italy, Britain, Poland

00:33and Denmark, who are expected to outline a European action plan and discuss the deployment

00:39of troops to Ukraine, if there were to be a peace settlement.

00:44It was called amid growing concerns about the new US administration's rhetoric on the

00:48war, after President Donald Trump's 90-minute phone call with President Vladimir Putin had

00:54palms sweating.

00:56EU leaders said they must not be locked out of peace talks, as their security and interests

01:01are at stake too.

01:03A call reiterated by Volodymyr Zelensky.

01:07Ukraine will never accept deals made behind our backs without our involvement.

01:15And the same rule should apply to all of Europe.

01:20No decisions about Ukraine without Ukraine, no decisions about Europe without Europe.

01:27But the US Secretary of State has downplayed concerns, saying nothing's been finalised.

01:33It will reach a point when you are, if it's real negotiations, and we're not there yet,

01:37but if that were to happen, Ukraine will have to be involved, because they're the one that

01:40were invaded.

01:41And the Europeans will have to be involved, because they have sanctions on Putin and Russia

01:46as well.

01:47And they've contributed to this effort.

01:49We're just not there yet.

01:50We really aren't.

01:51He added that one phone call does not make peace, and that the coming weeks would reveal

01:55Putin's true intentions on whether or not he wants to end the war for good.
