Man City 4-0 Newcastle United: Joe Buck match reaction as Omar Marmoush hat-trick downs Magpies

Joe Buck reacts to Newcastle United's 4-0 defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. A first-half hat-trick from Omar Marmoush and a late James McAtee strike inflicted a third defeat in four Premier League games onto Eddie Howe's side.

00:00Well, this is hardly an unfamiliar video we're doing here but Newcastle United have lost

00:054-0 at the Eddie Howarth Stadium. A bitterly, bitterly disappointing day for Eddie Howarth

00:10side. They came to the City Slings here with hope that they could end their long wait for

00:15a Premier League win. You know, they've never won a Premier League game here at Eddie Howarth

00:19Stadium and before the game you're thinking that there is a chance of that. You know,

00:23Man City aren't being in the best of form. Newcastle have had some good wins recently

00:26against some big opponents, you know, also twice in the Carabao Cup but their Premier

00:31League form has dipped. That's now three defeats in four and today was probably the lowest

00:36moment of the season and probably one of the worst games of the last few years for Eddie

00:41Howarth's side. It was really disappointing. You know, they didn't lay a glove on Man City.

00:46I thought if they go at them they'll be able to pressure them and get at the crowd and

00:51potentially get at a team that are low on confidence maybe but they didn't do that.

00:57A hat-trick from Omar Mahmoud in the first half went 3-0 at the break and then a James

01:03McAteer goal in the second half was enough for the win but yeah, it was one of those

01:06days. No, no Newcastle player really did themselves any sort of service. Maybe Lewis Bainu came

01:10on at half-time. He was the only one who could maybe hold himself, you know, hold his head

01:14high but other than that Newcastle were just outplayed or out-fought, out-ran. Much like

01:17I said against Bournemouth who had a plan and you know, expertly did that plan. Man

01:22City didn't have that. Well, Man City had a plan but they just also had lots of better

01:26players. They played the way that they normally do and yeah, they comfortably beat Newcastle

01:30tonight and they'll have to go back to the drawing board and it's a really disappointing

01:33day for them. This performance is in their locker. They've seen them get beat a few times

01:38against big teams and really good teams and not just get beat today but they got hammered

01:42so yeah, it's one of them when Newcastle will now have to go back to the drawing board.

01:45Hope this doesn't happen at Wembley against Liverpool and yeah, it's hard to dissect such

01:50a lacklustre performance because as I mentioned, no real player come off that pitch with any

01:55sort of credit I don't think. Eddie Howe's game plan from the beginning was to tuck Jacob

01:59Murphy into a makeshift right back in defence with Trippier sort of pushing into a third

02:04centre-back role and that just allowed Manchester City to play their game. It played into their

02:08hands. They were just allowed freedom of control on the ball. They didn't really press their

02:12defence. They couldn't get any possession going in the first half and yeah, the first

02:18goal came from ahead. It's a long ball. Trippier gets stuck under the ball, doesn't head it

02:23away. Malmoosh just lobs it over for 1-0. It's a good finish to be fair but any striker

02:27scores that and you feel like when you play a Man City team, the one thing you don't want

02:31to do is concede from a set-piece or concede from a long ball like that and they did and

02:35that was the ultimate sin and then sort of a few minutes later it was 2. Malmoosh gets

02:39it on the left. He has a strike, cuts back across, hits it in the near post, goes under

02:43Trippier's leg and sort of wrong-footed to Martin De Braafke and it's 2-0. 3-0 just a

02:48moment, you know, a few moments later. Savino down the right who had Lewis Hall all game

02:51and Lewis Hall had one of his poorest games of the season. Defensively, Savino was all

02:56over him and he just, you know, he found a bit of space, cut the ball back. Malmoosh

02:593 in the box. I've got no idea who was marking him. It might have been Bruno Guimaraes, it

03:02might have been his man, we're not really sure because he had so much time in the box

03:05that he managed just to find himself space and he had the easiest of tasks to tap home

03:10and he had 3-0 half-time. It could have been more, it probably could have been De Braafke,

03:13didn't have loads of saves to make but Man City was so on top. He got one real chance

03:18in the first half, that was through Ease Atkins. It was played through sort of one-on-one,

03:22it was out wide and his shot was blocked and deflected wide. Yeah, Alan Shearer's half-time

03:27described the performance as pathetic and I think that was probably the right word to

03:30describe that first 45 minutes, you know, Shearer was probably banging on the money

03:33there. They came out for the second half, they had a little bit more energy. Lewis Miley

03:37came on for Joe Willock and Tino Liveromento came on for Kieran Trippie and it was marginally

03:41better in the second half but was that because Manchester City sort of completely took their

03:45foot off the gas and didn't try, you know, very probably. I think Newcastle never looked like

03:50getting a foothold back in the game. They had one shot on target, that was a well-worked move

03:53down the right. They felt that Miley and his shot was saved by Ederson but other than that,

03:57they were really poor. By the end of the game, they were taking players off. Isaac got a rest,

04:00although he was on for much longer than probably anticipated. Anthony Gordon and Bruno came off

04:05with around 15 minutes to go, just saved their leg. So yeah, as I said at the beginning of the

04:08video, it's not an unfamiliar feeling, this at the AIC, coming back from here with a defeat,

04:13and a heavy defeat. But yeah, it was a really, really bad day for Newcastle. One that they'll

04:18really be, you know, hoping they can, that can be a kick up the backside they need because

04:22with Forrest to come next week and then Liverpool in midweek and after that Brighton in the Cup

04:28and then West Ham in the Premier League before the Carabao Cup, you know, that final, sorry,

04:31there's no easy games there and Newcastle will be really concerned if this form continues. Three

04:37defeats in the last four in the Premier League and it was, yeah, it's a sobering day for Newcastle

04:40and certainly one that they'll hope to put right next week, but I don't know how you do it because,

04:46you know, anyhow, I'm sure I will have answers and you'll hope I have answers, but yeah, it was a

04:50really disappointing day. They probably had one that, you know, other than Sven Bottmann, who'd

04:53like to say they didn't really have any other players out, so that's probably their full

04:56strength and they were battered by a Man City team really low on confidence again. So one of

05:01those days for Newcastle United, they'll go back to the drawing board. I'm sure their fans will

05:04reflect. It'll be lots of disappointment in the dressing room, online, on social media. I'm sure

05:09there's lots of disappointment and I've seen some of it and, yeah, hopefully Newcastle United can

05:12react because they're going to need it because they've done it in the past. They've had bad

05:15performances and reacted, but, you know, now, as I said, the three defeats in four in the Premier

05:19League and that only win coming away at Southampton that time, that's a concerning form, I think, and

05:24one that they'll have to put right going forward because they can't afford to lose too many more

05:28games. You know, Manchester City are going to get Champions League football. That's, I think, you

05:32know, if they can get more wins like this, they're going to get that. So there's three teams with

05:35Arsenal, Liverpool, guaranteed Champions League football. So you're looking at probably two,

05:39you know, two other spots, fourth or fifth, maybe, and you've got Forrest in there, Chelsea, Newcastle,

05:44Aston Villa, Brighton might find themselves in there, Bournemouth, of course, they won today,

05:47they've been really good. So there's lots of teams fighting for that and you guys can't afford to

05:50lose too much ground in that race and as much as the Carabao Cup final would be brilliant and

05:54everyone would be looking at the Carabao Cup final in the future thinking, you know, this is where

05:58Newcastle's season is. If they get that Cup final and haven't lost three or four in a row, A, that's

06:02not a good only goal in the Cup final. B, that could be their Premier League season and all of a

06:05sudden your season's over in mid-March, especially if you lose in the FA Cup. So yeah,

06:08it's going to, this is hopefully just a blip and then get probably right next week. But yeah,

06:13it's worrying signs in Newcastle, my head. Yeah, 4-0 defeat here in Manchester City,

06:18not a good afternoon for any outside.
