It's the world's biggest fish, weighing up to 60 tonnes. Yet it's called a 'gentle giant'. We went swimming with whale sharks, locally known as "Butanding", off Donsol town in the Philippine province of Sorsogon. And we discovered for ourselves why they earned the "gentle giant" tag.

00:00Hi, I'm Toby and we're going to see that thing over there today, please come and join us.
00:07Hi, I'm Farfan and we're going to swim with the whale sharks.
00:11It's kind of scary also and I'm not sure if I'm going to die.
00:30Okay, we're geared up for the boat trip in search of the biggest fish, biggest fish in
00:57the world right here in Don Sol Sosugon and that's my naughty boy, Toton.
01:03We're with our boatman, botanding information officer, si kuya.
01:10Yeah, and that's where we're going, the vast sea near Don Sol.
01:17Number one rule is don't touch the whale shark.
01:24Number two, don't restrict the movement of the whale shark or impede its natural path
01:29or get in the way of its path.
01:32Number three is the recommended distance from whale shark is three meters from the tail
01:39and no flash photography is allowed.
01:42There are no scuba scooters, jet skis or any motorized underwater propulsion.
01:50Well, these guys, these sharks, whale sharks are big but despite their humongous mouths
01:57and thousands of teeth, whale sharks pose no risk to humans.
02:02With a diet limited to tiny microorganisms, you're definitely not going to be on the menu.
02:10Plus, with an average swim speed of three miles per hour, they're quite accustomed to
02:17swimming alongside humans.
02:19These gentle giants are quite docile creatures.
02:24They're really gentle in the real sense of the word.
02:38That was super amazing.
02:40It was as big as a scuba.
02:42I hope someday soon we will do this again.
02:45So that's our encounter with the big whale sharks.
02:47Thanks for watching.
02:48See you next time. Bye.
