Hi, welcome to our flat. I'm Roy Tamano from the Maranao community.
00:08
If you are a Maranao and if you are practicing fasting in a faraway place,
00:13
you are always looking for belongingness. I mean, to share your feelings.
00:21
In our place, especially in the month of Ramadan, when we have this fasting, we used to stay together.
00:26
Mostly, if you are studying in a faraway place, like for example in Manila,
00:30
you ask for one week vacation just to be with your family.
00:34
Because Ramadan is not only the spiritual aspect, it has its family aspect.
00:39
That you have to be with your family, to share, like for example, the hardship.
00:44
Not only the hardship and the sacrifices, but the essence of how you feel.
00:49
And then it's also, like for example, if the Christians have their Christmas, we have this Ramadan.
00:55
Before, we are trying every weekend, we are inviting all those Maranaos here.
01:00
Because most of us are busy, like for example, those friends and relatives in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.
01:06
So what we did is, during the first Iftar, we try to invite some of our friends.
01:10
But what we did here, when the Ramadan starts, we try to invite some of our friends for a daily Iftar.
01:17
Every Iftar, we are inviting some, like for example, a couple, one, two or three friends.
01:23
So every day, they are coming here for an Iftar.
01:25
So at least, the whole duration, Inshallah, hopefully, we can have a perfect Ramadan,
01:32
that every day, we have someone sharing with us, with our Iftar.
01:36
Those people, they feel also lucky and they are very thankful,
01:39
that during Iftar, they can share with someone other than their friends.
01:44
Mostly, they are bringing also some of their favorite foods.
01:48
That's why we are always cooking our native foods.
01:51
The most popular are these three.
01:56
This is chicken with grated coconut.
02:01
We call it Manokapiaparan.
02:03
And we have this beef randang.
02:05
But this beef randang was originally coming from the Indonesians.
02:08
But since our ancestors also coming from the Indonesians, so we try to inherit it from them.
02:14
So the third one is this Pisih Satay.
02:17
Way back in our place, we used to use the smoked tuna.
02:20
But here, since it's hard for us to find the smoked tuna,
02:23
and then we try to make some improvise by using the tuna in can.
02:28
The procedure is the same.
02:30
So the result is quite the same.
02:32
As they said, there is no place like home.
02:36
Because in our place, Marawi, every time the fasting, you will feel really the difference
02:41
because the climate there is cold, mild.
02:45
And also the visitation is there.
02:47
In the local area, in your neighbors, whatever they are cooking,
02:51
they will give or they will share.
02:54
In Marawi city, it's a city.
02:56
But once you mention a family name, everyone knows that this guy is the grandson of this.
03:05
That's why we are very close.
03:06
And that's the thing we really miss.
03:08
It is really a pleasure that we see, or I see by myself,
03:13
the unity of being Maranao here in the region.
