00:00
Heavy rain and major flooding continuing across northern Queensland but finally
00:05
after a wet two weeks some reprieve is on the way for northern Queensland but
00:09
firstly as another wet night and day across much of northern Queensland we
00:14
saw widespread falls of 50 to 150 millimetres from Cowan Yama all the way
00:19
down through the peninsula, North Tropical Coast, Herbert and Luberdican
00:22
with even moderate to heavy falls around the central coast and Whitsundays. But in
00:26
the last six hours I want you to point to the circulation we're starting to see
00:29
in the radar and that indicates that a low is developing along the monsoon
00:33
trough and the good news with that is it's starting to continue moving
00:37
eastwards and that means it's going to contract the rain finally away from our
00:41
flood affected areas of Queensland but we still have a wet 24 hours to go and
00:46
that's why we have a severe weather warning current from Tully all the way
00:50
down to Bowen, Prosperpine and Hamilton Island. What that means if you live in
00:54
this highlighted area or know someone that does, further forecast rainfall will
00:58
lead to flash and riverine flooding and we could see falls of 100 to 200
01:02
millimetres in this area in the next 24 hours with isolated tough totals in
01:06
excess of that. A particular concern now already flood affected communities around
01:11
Cardwell, Ingham, Rollingstone and down to Townsville where any additional heavy
01:15
rainfall will likely lead to rapid river responses and because of all this
01:20
rainfall over the last week or two we do have many flood warnings current across
01:25
much of northern Queensland. A particular concern our residents and communities
01:29
that live on and near any flood affected rivers that includes major flooding on
01:33
these red highlighted areas including the Flinders River, the Cape River as
01:37
well as the Herbert River and the Horton River around Townsville area. We're also
01:42
seeing moderate flooding and a number of other rivers around Queensland with
01:46
minor flooding also in the green and flood watches current for large parts of
01:50
the peninsula and around the Gulf Country as further rainfall in these
01:54
areas were likely to lead to flash and possible riverine flooding and more
01:59
rainfall is on the way. Let's look at that in more detail so today widespread
02:04
showers and rain as you saw in the radar earlier continuing around from Port
02:08
Douglas all the way down to around Proserpine and our flood affected
02:11
communities but notice as we move into tonight and tomorrow we'll see a low
02:15
developing off the shore and continuing to move away from the coast and it's
02:19
going to really dry things out along much of eastern Queensland and you can
02:23
note by Thursday morning pretty dry conditions across much of eastern
02:27
Queensland as southerly winds bring drier air and the monsoon trough moves
02:30
north as well contracting rainfall to northern parts of Queensland and over
02:35
the next few days total rainfall mostly in that 25 to 75 millimetres that we
02:41
could see widespread 50 to 150 millimetres along our flood affected
02:45
area some Innisfail down to around Bowen but most of this rainfall will fall in
02:49
the next 24 hours and then finally we're going to see a clearance as we
02:53
move into Thursday and Friday with the rainfall contracting to north of Cairns
02:57
into the Peninsular District. So our last day of heavy rainfall and severe weather
03:03
conditions likely from Tully down to Eyre with heavy falls possible between
03:07
Cardwell and Eyre. So if you live in this area or know someone that does make sure
03:11
you stay up to date the latest forecasts and warnings by our website and app and
03:15
listen to all advice from emergency services.
