Which Club To Use As You Chip Around The Green

In this video, PGA Professional Katie Dawkins offers some advice on which club to use in different positions as you chip around the greens.

00:00So a lot of people lose a lot of shots around the greens, they've hit a couple of decent

00:08shots to get here, yet somehow still walk off with a six or a seven.

00:12And usually that's down to pool club selection or pool shot selection if you like.

00:16So when you find your ball around the green, ask yourself one question, if someone was

00:21going to give you a winning EuroMillions lottery ticket, if you could throw the ball close

00:25to that hole, how would you do it?

00:27I bet none of us from here would go up and over and lob it as high as we can.

00:30We'd all give it a bit of lawn bowls and roll it along the ground.

00:34That gives you the answer to the question of what club you should be putting in your

00:37hand at that point.

00:39We want something with less loft on here, we want to be doing a short little chip shot

00:43that runs the ball in.

00:44There's absolutely no point taking our sand wedge out, flying it as high as we can in

00:48the air, because for that we're going to need quite a big swing, and we all know if that

00:52goes wrong there's quite a lot of momentum there to carry your ball further out and over

00:57at the back of the green.

00:58So small, compact swing is much, much safer option.

01:02So that's one of the best ways to work out what club to hit from what place.

01:10So here's the perfect opportunity where if we had that ball in our hand and we were going

01:14to throw it, we're going to have to be a bit cute with it and pop it up high and get it

01:18to stop quick.

01:19So that tells us that we need to choose something with a lot of loft on it.

01:22So possibly the most lofted club in our bags might be a sand wedge, might be a lob wedge.

01:27The biggest thing to remember with these clubs is they put the ball in the air for you.

01:30The only thing you've got to do is make sure you get the turf, so you get what's underneath

01:34it.

01:36And all you need to apply to this is a nice little tick-tock action.

01:41So just back and through.

01:44And the ball will pop up in the air because there's loft on that club, not because you

01:47were trying to help it.
