We take a look inside the bag of LIV Golfer Henrik Stenson to see which clubs he is employing for the season.
Transcript
00:00Right we are here at the Live Golf UK event at JCB Golf Club with Henrik Stenson and we are going
00:06to do a quick what's in the bag. So I've taken all the head covers off and we're going to start from
00:11the very top and I don't know whether this is going to be the world's most interesting what's
00:14in the bag or the world's most boring what's in the bag. Most boring. You've had the same stuff
00:19for so so long. Talk me through that for a start. You're just not a big changer, not a big experiment
00:24with gear? No I think once we've found stuff that we know works then I tend to hang on to it. So
00:31with the with the three wood in particular right? We'll get to that. Yeah yeah okay sorry I'm not
00:35going to run away with it. We'll start from the top. So yeah in the big stick we've got the Callaway Epic
00:40Max LS and yeah that's in your familiar Graffaloid Blue X. Now this is a shaft that was around when
00:46I was in my junior day so we're talking 20 plus years and this is just something you've always
00:50used and always been familiar with. Yeah yeah what once you know you kind of I like the feeling of
00:55it it's a stiff shaft and it's it's done me a lot of good so why change it? Absolutely and we've got
01:02a couple of contradictory settings here so we're down one in loft which is opening the face a little
01:06bit but we've got weight in the heel to encourage draw. Do you shape-wise with this is it pretty
01:12neutral? Are you looking at neutral? It's pretty neutral I think over the years I've I mean I haven't
01:18put a lot of curve on the on the golf ball in general I'm I'm very much hitting it straight
01:24with a possibly a slight draw most of the time so yeah more all the clubs hopefully go straight.
01:32And grips wise you've got another we've got an older grip here as well so the goal to go with the old
01:36shaft so you've got to coordinate all the age ranges have you? Yeah yeah okay beautiful and do you have
01:41any extra layers of tape it feels pretty much straight on this? Yeah no we we put half a one on the
01:46on the right hand. So just to take the taper out a little bit yeah yeah exactly okay well now the
01:51first bit I've been really excited about the iconic three wood so what iteration of the three wood is
01:56this is this this is uh I mean I've gone through a couple of heads but this is the 2009 Diablo Octane
02:03uh I think I got it tested out just before they would have been the first I guess race to the
02:09Dubai final in 09 down in Dubai and came in the bag and has been in the bag uh most of the week since.
02:16And do you still lean on this an awful lot of the tee? Yeah I mean some courses we would definitely have
02:21more drivers than um than three woods but um yeah I mean it's a trusty trusty club um if you're standing
02:29there on the 72nd holes and you need a fairway finder that has been in general the one that we go to
02:34yeah. Are you a teal up low guy or do you knock up a bit of turf? What do you do? A bit of both depends on
02:40depending on the shot yeah depends on but uh I think I've hit hit it off the deck more than most.
02:45Okay I bet you have and do you know the specs on it in terms of length or do you let other people get
02:49on with that? I'd say it's probably about half an inch longer yeah standard. As soon as I put it down
02:55it went to me I was thinking 43 and a half 43 three quarters maybe yeah yeah okay so then blending away
03:00from that iconic number again we've got another very old what are we calling this forward what
03:04you call this forward yeah so Callaway X-Hot 17 degrees the X-Hot Pro same shaft throughout again
03:10the Grafaloid Blue Tour X there so assuming this is just I mean we've got a lovely wear mark here
03:16you must be proud of that one yeah we've hit a couple in the center I guess yeah every now and then
03:19it looks like you've got a few there uh interviewing Ian this morning with his what's in the bag um
03:24he's artificially done his wear marks he's he's sharpied out the bits around it to create a
03:28centered strike so that's something you might want to bring up with him who is he trying to
03:32fool himself or the people watching well yeah this is it remains to be seen so I guess from a yardage
03:38point of view this just fills in the right gap for you yeah I mean the three wood is strong right
03:42it's about 12 degrees so it's more of a two wood so this is stated loft 13 yeah no it's not really
03:49bent I think that head is just a little bit stronger and then this one at 17 degrees so it's just
03:55kind of bridge the bridge the gaps and then down into the into the three iron really so I'm looking
04:02in your bag here and we're getting into now the super iconic iron that have been in your bag for
04:05ages the Callaway Legacy Blacks now how many sets of these have we had oh I got a whole garage full
04:11of them they normally last a year year and a half these ones are very new though I just put these in a
04:17couple of months ago I got one more brand new set at home then what and then we're retiring then we're
04:24done yeah as soon as the clubs are done we're done yeah okay cool really interesting we've got
04:28two three irons here talk me through that yeah so uh coming fresh off the open this set doesn't
04:32come with a two iron so we took uh took a three iron head bent it down and lengthened it obviously
04:37so that that's my two iron that's in for probably about four or five tournaments a year then the
04:42forward goes out and this one this driving iron is in the bag instead do we know what we're going
04:47in this week we driving on a forward or have you not seen the course yet I haven't seen the course yet
04:50uh I think are we doing two iron or forward this week lordy
04:57okay so two iron is out two iron gone yeah flat out completely gone on that your man polter told me
05:05to uh mention some stuff about the durability of your clubs he said heads tend to last quite a long
05:10time some of the shafts they don't last as long no they're pretty brittle these motor shafts yeah yeah
05:16yeah they uh they normally need some assistance though okay that's interesting to see and you'll
05:20say again without wanting to go too far off track he asked to mention the expensive nature of the
05:25front panel of these golf bags yeah how much are they to replace would you know anything about that
05:30at all uh they're not as uh as durable as a steel plates no okay understood we'll move on from that
05:38straight away yeah do that so we've got essentially not too wide now that's gone three iron down to
05:43pitch and wedge yeah in the legacy black so why have you stayed in these for so long again it's just
05:47i'm assuming a case of you found something you like what's yeah i really like the uh the look of
05:53them and and um i mean the big reason we came straight off the use open at marion uh that justin won
06:00in 2013 and i was playing pretty good that week but the the irons i had i think it was the racer tours or something
06:07like that and i hit a number of flyers that cost me daily that that weekend uh we came to munich
06:13and we asked the guys like what do we have that's not going to fly as much and and they came up with
06:18these ones they got the the multi-groove so there's 19 grooves on the face of these yeah that's a more
06:24spin less chance of flyer i'm guessing exactly that was the whole thing so i mean we're not really
06:27catching many flyers but they also uh you know they they go short rather the first cut in particular and
06:34and i'm a high spinner of the golf ball so there's always that give and take when we're playing
06:39into the wind you hit a bit hard and with a high spin and it's always a tendency to to stall a bit
06:46so it's uh but on the other end i've been known to be able to stop like my mid mid to long irons on
06:53on slightly firmer greens than a lot of the other players so it's it's always going to be a give and
06:57take somewhere so just balancing that trade off all the time okay that's brilliant they're into wedges so
07:02less wedges than some of the guys i've seen so we've got kind of a three wedge setup if we're
07:05including your pitching wedge yeah go 52 and 58 in the callaway jaws wedges here and i see on the 58
07:13we've got i'm not going to say a messy sole but it's had some work done what specifically yeah we'll
07:17just take off a little bit here on the heel when when you need to lay it open and especially especially
07:23on firmer turfs then yeah it can it can bounce a little bit too much otherwise on the heel so we shave a
07:30little bit off that and in terms of i i've tried at times to um to take take out the three iron
07:39i strengthen the forearm a little bit and and try and work in four wedges but i always felt like i was
07:45probably because of the two wood forward it was a big gap down that end and that's always been a
07:50strong part of my game as well with a long iron so i felt like i exposed myself a bit too much there and
07:55not gained enough on that so i've always kind of bounced back to to uh three wedges so if i would
08:01have had a fourth one that would have gone as well okay lovely and are you a guy who changes his wedges
08:06for the venue and the ground conditions or you just have your setup and you adapt from there because
08:10you play a lot of different grasses right yeah i tend to have the same ones okay i tried a little bit
08:15last week at true and have one one of the new callaway wedges uh that had less bounce on it and it was a
08:22bit sharper but then out of the bunker you feel like it's always always a bit of bit of give and
08:28take so um yeah i i tend to stick with the same ones okay brilliant and then finally into the putter
08:35i've always been intrigued by these grips you use on part of the garson grips yeah so what got you in
08:40that so for those who don't know we've got a ridge that sits all the way down the front of the grip
08:44here you sort of guide your your wrists into a more yeah you kind of end up on on the outside of
08:50that reminder instead a little bit so it's yeah i just i tried them out my my putting coach phil
08:57kenyon he wanted my left hand to be a bit weaker and then i kind of matched up well with that grip
09:02and then i've tend to use this this model and in different finishes for for quite some excuse me
09:07quite a long time uh over those 10 years so we've got the number seven here stroke lab big seven
09:12and some nice swedish custom colors there for you yeah yeah really nice name and there's a little bit
09:19on the way a bit of customization throughout the set there so that's great that's a really good
09:22look inside the back you just tell me ball wise what you play i'll play the uh the regular pro v1
09:27the the 23 version okay great well thank you very much for your time really appreciate that and great
09:32great luck this week thank you thanks
