M23 rebels seek to march on Kinshasa

00:00In the M23's first public gathering since taking control of Goma, Kone Nanga, head of

00:06the movement's political wing, once again asserted that he wanted to march on Kinshasa.

00:11On Wednesday, the Democratic Republic of Congo issued an international arrest warrant for

00:15the M23 figure, notably accused of war crimes.

00:19Thousands of people have died in less than a week of fighting.

00:22Kinshasa urged the international community to sanction Rwanda for supporting M23.

00:28At the DRC's request, the UN Human Rights Council is due to hold an emergency meeting

00:32on Friday to discuss the crisis.

00:35Thousands of people have been killed, including women and children, and hundreds of thousands

00:40have been forced from their homes in the eastern DRC.

00:44After taking control of the capital of North Kivu province, M23 and the Rwandan troops

00:49have advanced into the south of the region.

00:52Their troops seized the mining town of Niwabibwe, and the President of the National Assembly,

00:56Avital Kamhere, also reported the presence of rebels in Ihussi, a locality some 40 kilometres

01:02from Kavumu, where Congolese armed forces are located.

01:06My message is clear, silence the guns.

01:10The stakes are too high and we need the active and constructive role of all players, namely

01:16neighbouring countries, sub-regional organisations, the African Union and the United Nations.

01:23This new offensive comes at a time when the M23 had announced a unilateral humanitarian

01:28ceasefire, supposed to have been in force since Tuesday.

01:31Felix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame are due to attend a joint extraordinary

01:37summit of the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community in

01:42Tanzania on Saturday.
