New term and new school for Tasmania’s students

School is officially back! This morning 60 thousand Tasmanian public-school students stepping back into classrooms around the state. The day has extra significance for two regional communities with new schools in Brighton and Legana opening their doors to students for the first time.

00:10I'm a lot excited and this much nervous.

00:16It's going to be really fun for me.

00:20The new school is already luring families to the area and helping to change attitudes.

00:26Jordan's had a tricky time adjusting into school and this has been our first year where

00:31he's been chomping at the bit to get into school.

00:35We were just amazed at the opportunities these guys are going to have.

00:38I wanted to come on Monday because it was so cool.

00:41She went just up right away, didn't you?

00:43The Kaurna Primary's numbers are projected to soar in coming years, eventually reaching

00:47350 enrolments.

00:48Our kinder population, we've got 40 students so that's two kindergartens and that shows

00:55you the progression of our population for the school.

00:59At the other end of the state, the new Brighton High School has opened its doors for the first

01:03time to 122 Year 7's battling first day nerves.

01:09It's a mix of both, it's just really scary but it's also exciting.

01:13Yeah, it's really cool but I really miss primary school.

01:16With Hobart's outer suburbs continuing to grow rapidly, the school gives students and

01:21parents new options.

01:23The community are the ones that have championed this school for their kids and the huge opportunity

01:27to have their young people as adolescents in the community.

01:31But even at new schools, some things remain the same.
