00:00In this packed hospital ward, bleeding patients are forced to wait for their turn.

00:05As the influx of wounded people grows, this emergency room in Goma is struggling to cope.

00:13The current situation is chaotic. In three days, we have received more than 400 people.

00:19From January to today, we have more than a thousand injured.

00:23Following intense clashes between the Congolese forces and the M23 rebel group,

00:31the hospital's capacity of 146 beds has been reached. Doctors are currently healing more

00:38than 200 patients. Most of the injuries here are caused by explosive devices.

00:45There have been days here when we've done 14, 15 open abdominal surgeries,

00:51with injuries to all internal organs. These surgeries take at least two hours.

01:00On Tuesday, the UN and other aid agencies warned that there are dead bodies in the streets of Goma

01:07as hospitals are getting increasingly overwhelmed.

01:10There are currently hundreds of people in hospital,

01:13most admitted with gunshot and shrapnel wounds. Secondary infections become health risks.

01:21WHO is especially worried for the health and safety of women and girls who are at the higher

01:27risk of violence, including rape. Pregnant women are at risk with very high maternal death rates.

01:34Food scarcity, lack of electricity and internet blackouts

01:38are exacerbating the increasingly severe humanitarian crisis in the city.
