BMitch asks Washington Capitals play-by-play announcer Joe Beninati whether he believes Alex Ovechkin will break Wayne Gretsky's goal record this season.

00:00We, we all expect Alex to break this record, uh, and I'm thinking it's going to be this

00:06season to be honest with you, as you look at it and you look at how he's been doing

00:10and you know, he could go on these spurs now and I think another spurt or two are coming.

00:15When the, you, you, do you have like the expectation or a time when you think this could possibly

00:21happen? Cause I know those tickets are going to be high as hell.

00:24Yeah. I don't want to go. I don't want to go there with you just yet, Brian. I don't

00:29want to, I'm not, I'm trying not to sit on the fence with you here. It's just, he would

00:34need to get smoking hot in the remaining games of the regular season to get there. Um, nothing

00:40would surprise me though. Cause he's done absolutely everything you could imagine in

00:44the last 20 years to make, uh, the eyes pop out of your head. He's just, when you say

00:49no, there's no, no, it's going to happen next year. Boom. He'll got to go on a run where

00:53he gets 10 goals in a week and, and brings that target number closer and closer right

00:59now, as I sit here in Ottawa, I I'm more prone to think that it might happen early next season.

01:05But again, he's the kind of player who is a streak jump shooter. You know, he's the guy

01:12you camp him out behind the three point line and he'll hit 12 in a row. And if that happens,

01:17then we will be talking about something, you know, late March, early April, where he could

01:21be on the precipice of it. I just, from what I see, I expect him to be in the mix in the

01:28neighborhood, but I don't know about this season, Brian. I just don't. That's just me.

01:33Like I said, all it takes though is one, six or seven goal week. And then we're right back

01:37to talking about, well, where are the projections going to fall? If it's going to happen, I think

01:41it's more likely late March, early April, but in my gut, my gut thinks it's early fall next season.

01:49That fluke injury, man. Messed up things.

01:52Now, if that, exactly right. If that doesn't happen, he was playing so gosh darn well.

01:58If that doesn't happen in Utah in November, then we would be having the conversation.

02:03We would definitely be on the watch. That injury was significant. It sidetracked him.

02:09His mobility is coming back. He's skating better, but he was moving much better before the injury.

02:15And that did, that did curtail some of all, some of this.
