So we're here in Ludlow at the fantastic Rose and Crown Jewels pub and Ben you're part of the team?
00:05
Yes, so my wife Jess is the landlady who runs the business.
00:09
Cool, for people who haven't been here, describe the pub, it's full of historical features.
00:14
So it started, the records go back to the 1100s as a coaching inn and then
00:23
it was transformed into the Rose and Crown pub dating 1300s.
00:29
Jewels bought it back in 2016, renovated, keeping all the features of the pub as natural as possible.
00:40
Well I've just learned that that old back wall in the pub there,
00:43
that was actually part of a monastery?
00:45
Yes, yeah part of the monastery that was in Ludlow dating 1100s.
00:49
So does that date it older than the castle?
00:51
It does indeed, yeah.
00:51
That's crazy isn't it really?
00:53
I'm sure it comes with all its old quirks, you know keeping on top of a building at this age.
00:58
But just describe it then, so it's a lot of wood, wood panelling, that warmth of wood as they say?
01:05
Yes, so the mouse bar which is on the right as you walk in is
01:10
made out of reclaimed pieces of wood from Robert Thomas the Mouseman.
01:15
Who's Robert Thomas? That rings a bell, Robert Thomas the Mouseman.
01:17
He used to carve mice or animals into his work to identify it as his own.
01:23
Was he a Ludlow man then?
01:25
He was North Shropshire I believe.
01:27
Okay yeah, so it's got its historical and yeah.
01:33
Jewels are good at that aren't they?
01:34
They find these amazing kind of quirky little features and kind of you know salvage them
01:39
and then repurpose them.
01:40
So Jewels, when they take on a new venue for the estate, they like to reuse materials rather than buying new.
01:50
It's a very eco-friendly model.
01:52
And what's going down well in terms of what you're serving up on the bar at the minute?
01:57
So the core range, the Slumbering Monk, Pale Ale and Blonde.
02:02
Slumbering Monk is our best seller of those, of the Jewels range.
02:06
And is it, what do they call it, a wet pub? Is it big on the food as well?
02:10
Wet and dry, so we do a lot of food and then we do a lot of wet sales as well.
02:16
Cool and do you have events here at all?
02:17
Yes, so we tend to have music every weekend.
02:20
Since opening in December 23, we've had music on every weekend since opening.
02:26
What's, what's, we talk, like guitars?
02:29
So we do a range of things, tend to be more towards the guitar, pub rock.
02:35
Yeah.
02:35
But we had had a few electronic music events.
02:38
Okay, that's cool.
02:39
It's gone down quite well with the crowd.
02:41
Yeah, yeah.
02:41
We've had varied ages of people that come to the venue.
02:45
And I'm guessing it's a mix of regulars, locals and tourists, is that how it works?
02:49
Yes, yeah, regulars, tourists and locals.
02:51
Yeah.
02:52
Is any ghost stories or anything?
02:54
So our cellar man, Sarge, reliably informs us there's a ghost that lives in the cellar.
02:59
Yeah.
03:00
He's dated back to the 1200s.
03:02
Yeah.
03:02
So he's had a good chat with him.
03:04
That's good stuff, I love a, I love a good old guy story.
03:08
A few, back in 2017, the restaurant was mysteriously condimented, shall we say.
03:15
Yeah.
03:15
And there was no explanation for it.
03:17
The cameras didn't show anything.
03:18
No way.
03:19
So, do, do, do.
03:22
Cheers, Ben.
03:23
Well, thank you for letting us have a look round and good luck in future business at the pub.
03:26
Cheers, buddy.
03:27
Thank you very much.
03:27
Cheers.
