How the NT celebrated Australia Day in 2025

Thousands of families and friends across the Northern Territory have taken part in a range of community events to mark Australia Day. From peaceful Invasion Day protests, to citizenship ceremonies, and a parade of utes, Territorians marked the day in their own unique style.

00:10rich multiculturalism.

00:11Definitely celebrating the diverse culture of Australia.

00:12I think it's just inclusiveness, like bringing everyone together.

00:22At Darwin's annual Ute run, there was no shortage of Australian flags and plenty of colourful

00:29characters.

00:30Happy Australia Day!

00:31Yes, Happy Australia Day!

00:32And thank you so much to all our supporters.

00:35Elsewhere, a sombre mood as protesters paused to reflect on the lasting impacts of British

00:41colonisation.

00:42You know, for me, that's why we call this Survival Day.

00:45We're struggling in every area, not just child protection, not just justice, even the

00:51incarceration of adults.

00:53We don't only call this Invasion Day, we call this Survival Day.

00:57And we want our First Nations and our Indigenous youth to survive.

01:01I don't have a problem with, every year, this country being confronted with the history

01:09and the present problems for Aboriginal people.

01:12And it's an opportunity for us all, every year, to reflect, and that's what we're doing

01:16here today.

01:17Protesters continued their call to change the date of Australia Day to one everyone

01:22can celebrate.

01:24It's a broken heart to us, because the massacre, the death of Aboriginal people across this

01:29nation on that day, and the government refused to move the date.

01:34Don't celebrate the wrong date!

01:36Whether it's viewed as a day to celebrate, or a time to reflect on the survival of First

01:41Nations Australians, January 26 has brought together thousands of people from across the

01:46territory, many sharing stories and learning about the nation's history.

01:50Including Darwin and Palmerston, a special ceremony to welcome dozens of new citizens.

01:56Right now, I'm on top of the world to be an included Australian, I'm free to go anywhere

02:02I want to go.

02:03Proud to be one Australian fellow out there, and I'm going to be a good ambassador.

02:07I want to explore the Indigenous culture, yeah, you know, it's quite unique, and I really

02:15want to know and learn more about it.

02:18For many citizens, a day of new beginnings, as the nation reflects on Australia's past.
