00:05Thursday, January 23. The Hughes Fire, about 50 miles north of Los Angeles, broke out on January

00:1122, while crews were still battling two other fires on the city's eastern and western sides

00:16that had been burning for over two weeks. The Hughes Fire burned 10,176 acres but remained

00:22steady as 4,000 firefighters dropped water and retardant from the air. Evacuation orders

00:28are issued for 31,000 residents and warnings for another 16,000 people as the fire sent plumes

00:34of smoke over the hilly terrain near Castic Lake close to Santa Clarita. Firefighters

00:39contend with strong winds and low humidity, which are expected to persist through Friday.

00:44Rain and mountain snow are forecast for the Los Angeles area from Saturday to Monday,

00:48potentially offering relief but also creating other risks.

00:52Meantime, California Governor Gavin Newsom signs a $2.5 billion relief package for the

00:57fire-ravaged region.
