We welcome you back to the Early Line Live right here on this Monday all across the SportsGrid
00:06
Network.
00:07
A Monday after the divisional round of the NFL postseason with two more games upcoming
00:13
this weekend in conference championships at stake.
00:17
So with the significance of those matchups, of course, it is incredibly important to get
00:22
the injury analysis and insight.
00:24
So we welcome on Dr. David Chow, the pro football doc, to this Monday on TEL.
00:29
Dr. Chow, as always, thanks for your time.
00:32
Thanks for being here bright and early.
00:35
Thanks for having me.
00:36
Last season, wildcard round was the health advantages and we were hot.
00:41
This year is actually the divisional round.
00:43
We were the missed extra point away from sweeping the weekend with that Eagles two extra point
00:51
misses.
00:53
Yeah, six and a half point spread, the Rams did end up covering, but the Eagles do outlast
00:58
L.A. to get back to the NFC Championship for a second time in the last three years.
01:04
And Dr. Chow, anytime there is an injury to a quarterback that is going to start and get
01:10
a ton of our attention.
01:12
Jalen Hurts did exit the game yesterday against L.A. with a knee injury, came back with a
01:18
rather large knee brace on that left knee, said after the game when asked how he was
01:23
feeling, I finished the game.
01:26
When asked in his postgame press conference if he would be ready to go for that NFC title
01:30
against the Commanders, he said simply, yes.
01:35
What do you believe the status is for Jalen Hurts entering the NFC Championship game next
01:40
Sunday?
01:41
I think he's telling the truth.
01:43
He finished the game and yes, he'll be ready.
01:46
But how ready and how effective?
01:48
I think you saw in the second half of the game or after that knee injury, he didn't
01:54
keep the ball and run very much.
01:56
It sort of changed early on.
01:57
He was very effective.
01:58
Of course, it helped that Saquon was being very effective too.
02:03
But hopefully there's no structural damage.
02:07
It's not like a PCL injury.
02:09
It's a knee contusion, bursa injury.
02:12
Hopefully the MRI will show nothing else inside his knee.
02:16
He'll be hobbled, but he will play is sort of our opinion right now.
02:21
Doc, take us through the week here.
02:23
When you do bang up or let's just say have a knee injury on a Sunday with the thoughts
02:26
of playing next week, is there physical therapy that goes on or is it just more about rest
02:30
and recovery at this point?
02:33
Definitely both physical therapy, rest and recovery, different modalities, pressure wraps,
02:40
different pumps, different things, medications, all sorts of things.
02:47
This is what the athletic trainers are there.
02:49
You can literally get quote physical therapy three times a day, whereas the rest of the
02:54
world gets it at most three times a week.
02:59
You will be able to find the actual six score of Jalen Hurts out of 100 at Sports Injury
03:05
Central.
03:06
It's important, of course, to keep an eye on that all week long.
03:09
On the other side of the football doc for the birds, the outstanding rookie cornerback
03:14
Quinion Mitchell exited the game with a shoulder injury.
03:18
You want to be at your healthiest, of course, with a conference title at stake.
03:23
What is his prognosis entering conference championship Sunday?
03:27
Well, by video, it didn't look significant or major, but yes, it is something that may
03:33
affect him.
03:35
He is someone who will be limited in practice this week, but can play with an injection
03:41
in the right shoulder, maybe the AC joint.
03:44
Let's go to that Buffalo Bills game once again, played in a cold environment.
03:47
Taylor Rapp has been banged up for the majority of this season, comes back to play and it
03:51
looks like he might be out there with a hip injury, doc.
03:54
Based on the tape, what did you see and how might that injury impact him for this year
03:58
and maybe even to the offseason?
04:01
Well, we didn't see much on the tape.
04:03
He did not go down on the field.
04:05
He came out of the game without going down and then got evaluated.
04:09
It was on that strip sack fumble that he left the game, apparently went for x-rays, but
04:16
did not return.
04:18
He has been dealing with a hip issue before, so this one is a little more iffy in that
04:25
don't know what it is, but he's dealt with it before.
04:28
It's cropped up again and so he may miss.
04:31
Had to be carted off the field last night as well, at least from the sideline, doc.
04:36
Back to the NFC Championship game outlook.
04:39
One of the anchors of the O-line for the commander, Sam Cosby, a torn ACL in the victory Saturday
04:45
night in Detroit.
04:46
Of course, he is out for the remainder of this postseason.
04:49
Doc, you've been a part of NFL organizations having to deal with significant injuries at
04:54
significant times of the year and with your work at Sports Injury Central, you see the
05:00
field view.
05:01
You know how impactful these injuries can be.
05:04
How does it change that outlook for the commanders offensively entering this upcoming weekend?
05:10
Well, certainly unfortunate he got rolled up on.
05:13
We knew there was an MCL, there was worry for Moore, and now that Moore is the ACL,
05:17
which is certainly a big deal.
05:19
Surgery is over.
05:20
Depends on how the commanders will deal with it in terms of the shuffle.
05:24
That's what we do with the field view.
05:26
Is now the center moving to guard?
05:29
Is it just the backup being plugged in and their rating, etc.?
05:34
That's how we deal with it.
05:35
And look, Detroit Lions had a great season, but we've been saying for a long time they've
05:41
been doing it with mirrors defensively.
05:43
And here we go with the mobile quarterback that got up with all the defensive injuries.
05:48
They just finally all came to roost in this divisional round game.
05:52
No punts for the Washington commanders and 41 points.
05:57
Now we took the plus nine and a half.
05:59
We didn't think it was muddy line, but that should have been the better way to go.
06:03
But the defensive injuries did come home to roost.
06:07
Doc, playing out this weekend, there are obviously major matchups in the AFC and the NFC.
06:11
If we are looking at Jalen Hurts and Quinion Mitchell, what are the steps that you take
06:15
here to try to provide them with maybe a shoulder harness and or what sort of knee brace that
06:20
Jalen Hurts might be comfortable with?
06:22
Yeah, the knee brace that's on Jalen Hurts is more of a knee sleeve wrap.
06:28
I don't think it's structural.
06:30
I don't think there's metal stays.
06:32
It's more of a heavy wrap for swelling.
06:34
So hopefully that leaves him fairly functional.
06:38
In terms of Mitchell's shoulder injury, that's not a stability issue.
06:44
That's more of a pain tolerance and AC joint issue.
06:48
That's what we talk about injection.
06:50
But we haven't talked about yet, Teron Johnson, he went down on his left shoulder.
06:54
He may have subluxed his shoulder there.
06:56
He might wear a harness as he continues on.
06:59
Yep, Teron Johnson did leave the game for a little bit and came back against the Baltimore Ravens.
07:05
The Chiefs not mentioned because despite missing a lot of players throughout the year, at least
07:11
relatively healthy, entering yet another AFC championship game.
07:15
Dr. Chow, as always, we thank you.
07:17
More on the early line up next.
