00:22It arose in Beijing over 200 years ago, during the Mid-Qing dynasty.

00:29There are four main characters, the Sheng, who are gentlemen, Dan, who are women, Jing,

00:40who are men of strong character, and Chou, who are clowns.

00:45Each character has a different age, gender and social status.

00:52Performers use four main skills, namely song, speech, dance acting and combat.

01:13And the highest aim of performers is to put beauty into every motion.

01:21Today, Peking opera is regarded as a quintessential form of Chinese culture.
