Pianist Martino Tirimo offers Chichester masterclass and concert

Chichester Music Society combines with the University of Chichester to welcome Cypriot classical pianist Martino Tirimo on Wednesday, February 5.

00:06to speak to Martino Turrimo, who is coming to the University of Chichester for a very

00:12special day on, it's the 5th of February, isn't it? A very special day which will comprise

00:19masterclass with a number of students and then a concert in the evening which will feature

00:25some of those students and yourself. It's a lovely prospect, isn't it? But you were

00:29saying a masterclass is a difficult thing for a student, isn't it?

00:34It can be very, very, very difficult but I'm looking forward to working with the students

00:42there and on this occasion there is a special purpose in that afterwards they will be able

00:53to perform their pieces, the pieces that we have worked on and I think this is very important.

01:07For me, performance is really the best teacher. You learn an enormous amount when you're under

01:17pressure.

01:18The pressure is important, is it?

01:23Maybe, but performing is not the same as practising in your own home. There is a very, very big

01:35difference and it's wonderful that we're giving the opportunity to the students to perform

01:42at this concert.

01:43Exactly. And what's your hope at the end of the day that the students will take away with

01:48them from the masterclass? What do you hope they will gain?

01:51Well, we will try to analyse the pieces at hand and understand the language of the composer

02:05a little bit better because I believe that the performer's duty is really to the composer,

02:19first and foremost, not to exhibit one's own gifts, if you like, but to present the

02:32composition according to the wishes of the composer. Naturally, this will be in accordance

02:40to how you perceive the composition, how you understand the language of the composer.

02:46Exactly. And this is a happy engagement for you. You have a good relationship with Chichester.

02:51You've performed there before, haven't you, of course?

02:54Yes, I'm looking forward to it very much.
