Cook your cockles: No toxins but high bacteria levels found in Dungun 'harvest'

The Terengganu Fisheries Department says no biotoxins have been detected from water samples taken after the recent cockle-collecting "frenzy" at Pantai Sura in Dungun.   On Wednesday (Jan 15), hundreds of people thronged the beach to collect cockles that had been washed up in large numbers by strong, high waves. 00:13In a statement issued on Thursday, the department, however, said, based on surveys done earlier,

00:19laboratory results showed certain levels of faecal coliform E. coli bacteria in the cockles,

00:24higher than the permissible level.

00:26The department said cockles with such bacterial levels are classified as Class B, which means

00:32they must be fully cooked before consumption.

00:35It said a bacterial analysis is being carried out by the Kwantung Fisheries Biosecurity

00:40Laboratory and the full results will be known in three days.

00:44On Wednesday, hundreds of people thronged the beach to collect cockles that had been

00:49washed up in large numbers by strong high waves.

00:52Police also warned the public not to collect the cockles owing to dangerous and unpredictable

00:57sea conditions.
