Aerotrain contractors yet to give firm date on service resumption, says Loke

Contractors working to repair the automated people mover system (Aerotrain) at KL International Airport (KLIA) have not provided a definitive timeline for its resumption, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.  During a press conference at the Transport Ministry on Wednesday (Jan 15), Loke stated that the Aerotrains are currently in the testing phase. 00:00The government has made a lot of policies to ensure that airport growth, airlines, the

00:08entire aviation industry can grow healthily. But, of course, the airports must also follow

00:17up in terms of capacity building, in terms of capex. And that was one of the reasons

00:22why this privatisation exercise was conducted. And, as I said, this is a decision by Kazana,

00:30together with their partners in the consortium, to take this, Kazana as one of the major shareholders

00:36of MHB, to take it private. So, MOT, of course, supports the exercise. And we hope that more

00:45can be done, and at a faster pace. I have put on record, we are not happy with many

00:53things on MHB previously. A lot of decisions were late, were delayed. The AeroTrain is

01:00a good example. I have to answer to the public. But the AeroTrain is not a decision made by

01:08me. It's not a decision by MOT. The entire contract of the AeroTrain is conducted by

01:14the MHB board and the management. But I have to be answerable on behalf of them. I am not

01:19happy about their decision. Because right now I am being answerable. I am being asked

01:26every day about AeroTrain. Nobody will ask MHB. Everybody will ask the transport minister.

01:33Our friend from media will ask me at every occasion on AeroTrain. I have to be answerable.

01:38Yes, as the transport minister, I am answerable. But you have to understand, the decision was

01:44made by MHB. And they are supposed to be accountable as well. So that's why this exercise is something

01:51which we support, supported. And we hope that it can be completed. This is beyond us. Right

02:00now, we were told it's already nearing 90%. We hope that by end of this week, it can reach

02:06the targeted threshold. And we are equally hopeful that it can be done as fast as possible.
