Volunteers help survivors of the Xizang earthquake

Volunteers are heading to villages in China’s Xizang region to help with rescue and recovery efforts after the earthquake that killed 126 people.   Volunteers such as Wang Shengyun, a volunteer relief worker, are helping those without food and shelter

00:00Wang Shengyin is a noodle shop owner from Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, which is 3,000

00:05kilometers away from the epicenter.

00:08He and his friends volunteered to offer locals nearly 30,000 U.S. dollars worth of food

00:14supplies like noodles, beef, and apples.

00:17He cooks noodles every day for free in Gabor Village.

00:26We hope to provide people with goods in the most affected villages, so we contacted the

00:30Tongship government and they deployed us here.

00:33Now we offer at least 1,200 bowls of noodles for free in the hope the locals can eat warm

00:38food in the cold winter following the earthquake.

00:42More than 200 policemen from China Immigration in Shigazi are supporting affected locals

00:48in Yubai Village, Gabor Village, and Zatun Village in Changsu, Tongship.

00:53They help the locals rescue trapped people, livestock, and valuables after the earthquake.

00:59After the focus of relief efforts was shifted to post-disaster reconstruction, work included

01:04carrying relief materials, building shelters, keeping traffic in order, and more.

01:10In Gabor Village, home to more than 500 people, 21 policemen offered help.

01:20We have unloaded 70 tons worth of supplies today.

01:24We worked by shifts and rarely rested.

01:26For example, if colleagues working in the nearby village are tired, we will help them

01:31and vice versa.

01:32We hope the affected locals can lead a normal life as soon as possible.

01:41The policemen came to help us just half an hour after the earthquake hit us.

01:46All of our houses were severely damaged.

01:49More people died and over 20 were injured, but the help from our party and government

01:54has made us feel relaxed and warm.

01:58More than 60,000 people in Dingyu County were affected by the earthquake.

02:03Resettlement and post-disaster construction are in full swing despite the cold winter.
