00:00A proposed climate change legislation will drive Malaysia's green economy, according

00:06to Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

00:12Our target is that this year we're going to have our climate change bill.

00:16And when that's out, you know, then I think it will be a clearer framework on what industries

00:25do we want to attract, how much of a certain industries that we want to attract, and so

00:30on and so forth, so that we can meet our goals.

00:33In an interview with FMT, Nik Nazmi said the bill is being formulated with the Investment,

00:38Trade and Industry Ministry.

00:40He said the government has started to shift from a low-cost, low-wage economy to a high-value

00:45one, which he deems critical for a green economy.

00:48The idea for the legislation was first proposed in 2018, after Pakatan Harapan came to power

00:54but faced delays to ensure it was comprehensive and impactful, rather than toothless.

00:59However, the minister said economic impact is only one aspect of the triple planetary

01:04crisis that climate change brings.

01:07It is both saving the planet, climate and environmental lessons from Malaysia and beyond.

01:11He identifies the other two aspects, pollution and loss of biodiversity.

01:16Nik Nazmi wrote that while economic incentives are effective at motivating government action,

01:21they fall short of addressing the root of the problem.

01:24We recognise that economic growth is crucial for any economy.

01:29There are still pockets of poverty across the country, but at the same time we also

01:36know that if we pursue an approach of growth at all costs, then we will recognise that

01:47we will be damaging this inheritance that has been passed down to us, which is the planet.
